NDSU student’s book scanner inspires spinoffs around world
By: Amy Dalrymple, INFORUM

North Dakota State University graduate student Daniel Reetz is attracting worldwide attention for a do-it-yourself book scanner he invented.

The 28-year-old created the scanner a year ago out of cheap digital cameras and materials from the Dumpster because he couldn’t afford textbooks.

Now people around the world are building their own scanners after Reetz produced a detailed how-to guide and developed an online forum.

Cool way to be innovative.  His website is www.diybookscanner.org

There are two reasons that this is a great time to run a story about Dan. First, this intelligent and innovative young man is a graduate student. I point this out to remind everyone that President Hansen does not seem to think that NDSU graduate students need or deserve tuition waivers. Would this young man's time have been better spent waiting tables to pay for the myriad growing expenses relating to graduate school or creating new technology? Second, his office is in the basement of the collapsed section of Minard Hall. Through the grapevine I have heard about all the equipment and research material he has in his inaccessible office. For all those naysayers who have commented that the residents of Minard Hall should quit whining about their materials and get over it, does this sound like a lazy young man doing unimportant work?
