New year brings new sales taxHelmut Schmidt, The ForumPublished Thursday, January 01, 2009When you go to a store to buy a taxable item in Fargo, you’ll pay just a little bit more starting today. The city’s half-cent sales tax for the Fargodome ended on Wednesday, but a new full-cent sales tax to pay for water, sewer and other infrastructure projects has taken its place. That puts the sales tax at 6.5 cents on the dollar in Fargo.Five cents of that goes to the state’s coffers, while another half-penny goes to road infrastructure projects in Fargo through the end of 2012, city Finance Director Kent Costin said. The one-cent infrastructure sales tax was approved by Fargo voters in June 2006. Costin estimates that with continued economic growth, the one-cent sales tax could bring in $600 million over its 20-year life.
