NDSU to Cut Graduate Tuition Waivers?
« on: December 16, 2009, 11:33:50 PM »
Quote
To our students, faculty and staff:

After reviewing the details of NDSU’s adjusted appropriated budget for 2009-2010 it is apparent that our tuition revenue will not meet budget projections. I believe two major factors have contributed to this: lagging tuition collections and a greater number of tuition waivers. Therefore, the budget shortfall amounts to approximately $1.8 million.

To ensure a balanced appropriated budget, I am issuing a temporary hiring freeze. I am asking that there be no new hires and that no vacant positions be filled until further notice. However, as we review our spring tuition revenues, we will revisit this decision.  In the meantime, we will increase our tuition collection efforts and we are reviewing our tuition waiver process.

Reviewing our budgeting process is an important step in maintaining our university commitment to excellence.

I appreciate your support and I will continue to keep you informed.

Richard A. Hanson, Ph.D.
President

Does this sound worrisome to anyone else?  So the first area they look at cutting is tuition waivers as opposed to the hundreds of other areas they frivolously spend money??

"lagging tuition collections"

So, are they letting people attend school without paying for it?  Whose fault is this, I wonder?  How about getting your own house in order before you start cutting out graduate students--who probably teach a fair percentage of the classes?

The people they are letting attend without paying for it are the graduate assistants that teach classes and what not.  Its not gonna be a savings making them pay, because then they wont be teaching classes.

It is a lot cheaper for grad students to teach classes then a professor. A lot cheaper.  Thats fairly easy to see for someone that understands how graduate education works at most universities, it seems like some people arent seeing that.

Well.  You could always strike.  Then they'd be hip-deep in undergrads with nobody who would want to take the time to educate them...

Or you could sell the president's house to pay for this year.

Some people have been talking strikes, but there is much to discuss before that.
