Newman Center Race
« on: March 29, 2008, 10:09:23 AM »
Yo! Just curious how many of you are planning to do the Newman Center Race? I might be going to Iowa for the USCF race God willing but I also might be doing the newman race and I was just a little curious about others on the message board who may be doing the Newman ride...

Peace

Hey, since my collegiate cycling season is pretty much deleted (I'm ok with it, just not going to be able to happen because of work.  April is pretty much our busiest month what with being a bike shop and all.  I spoke with Terry about it on Sunday.  Yost, you should mostly be in the clear... mostly), I think I'll be making it to the Newman Center Ride, it really depends on work.  Not sure yet if I actually plan on racing it or just going for a casual ride... We'll see.

When is the race? Or even better where can I get info about it. I'd like to go if I'm not already doing something...

Counter to what my article states, the Newman Center race is on Saturday, April 26th.

Official Announcement

The DS article that announced the date is not online for some reason (the entire issue is not).

As an aside, they also welcome volunteers the night before to help out with the bike clinic, since a lot of people need help adjusting things or getting borrowed bikes fitted to them for the race.  I know SNB sends someone, but if you aren't affiliated and know what you're doing, they won't turn you away.

Im going to try and get Isaac or their race promoter on here this week!

I've been explaining that we're a SERIOUSLY untapped resource when it comes to this.

Nice deal! Hey Rock Lob when are you  riding?  we should get some rides in together...also it would be good to know your strategy for the newman race because if we are doing it together we could win it...just sayin and maybe some peach schnapps for the winner ;)

Yeah, I don't even like alcohol Cuervo.  Rock on about riding though!!  This week may be pretty full with switching the shop over, but I'll let you know when I know more.  I'm thinking Thursday evening perhaps.  Maybe even Wednesday, but I don't remember if I'm scheduled to work or not.  Peace out and good luck.  Main strategy: beat everyone else!   I know, it's brilliant.

I split this so it doesn't get confused with the group rides thread.

The link with official information is here:  http://www.und.edu/dept/newman/race.htm

The actual purpose of the race is to a) beat the group of riders from NDSU (organized by the Newman Center there) and b) raise money for charity.  The breakdown in points can be seen here.  When all is said and done, it's for charity, so get your friends and family to lay down a couple bucks so you can go throw down and beat NDSU.

At the moment, I know that I, Cuervo, Guardrail, and Nathan will be competing from the club, and we'd welcome anyone else to come along and represent.

Our club team will be riding in it. Its for a great cause... you should stop on out.

I think they're going to be busing people back. They usually truck the bikes back. If at all possible, setup ride arrangements to prevent having to toss ur bike in with the rest. I've not done it before though so I don't know what the trucking system is like.

You can add me to that list... I won't be traveling to Iowa with the team that weekend.

I've not done it before though so I don't know what the trucking system is like.

It's usually a semi-trailer (at least it's not a flatbed).  Not the best environment if you have a nice bike.

Reminds me I need to figure that out since my girlfriend and I will both be riding this year.

Squad... I realize the weather looks bleak at this point.

I'm expecting most of the snow to remain east of us and the route. Even still when you wake up it MAY still be snowing. Be patient. The precip will be dissipating right up to early AM like... between 7-9am. So show up anyways... make it a gametime decision if you're on the fence.

I have to say that I will be unimpressed with the Newman Center if they don't cancel this race.  It's dangerous for inexperienced riders, which is most of the peloton.

Yeah... Im glad they did cancel it.

They should've just postponed or rescheduled though. It sucks that they just say... oh well. And it sucks that they were still letting people sign up. I mean... I know its a donation, but still... for some people its an event.

Who told them specifically that we weren't going to be there?
