State Bank to continue ‘Pay It’ plan

Author Catherine Ryan Hyde says she’s tried to cut back on traveling from her California home since the whirlwind that followed her hit book “Pay It Forward” and the movie based on it in 2000.

But some things are worth the trip.

Hyde surprised employees of Fargo-based State Bank & Trust with an appearance at their Christmas party Saturday night at the Holiday Inn.

The party celebrated the bank’s Pay It Forward Program, which gave employees $502,000 last year and required them to spend it on individuals, families and organizations in need, and to chronicle their good deeds with camcorders.

“I can’t say no to this,” Hyde said in an interview before the party...

...In addition to the $502,797 the bank put up for the program last year, State Bank employees gave $35,790, foundations contributed $47,312 in matching funds and customers, businesses and individuals donated $80,417, for a total of $666,317.

“We want to continue to make that (giving) even easier for this year and maybe outdo some of the money that was raised last year, and this online strategy will help us,” Solberg said.

The bank has about 530 employees. As they did last year, full-time employees will get $1,000 each to spend on those in need, while part-timers will receive $500 each.

One twist this year is what Solberg called the “family edition” of Pay It Forward: Employees will receive an extra day off in 2009 plus a credit card preloaded with $200 for full-timers and $100 for part-timers. The rules about documenting how the money is spent still apply, “except for instead of not being able to spend it on your family, you have to spend it on your family,” Solberg said....

What a great program.  It would be cool to see more programs like this.
