So what is geocaching? I'm glad you asked...
« on: March 25, 2010, 10:25:28 AM »
I just got into the activity last summer when I got my own GPS receiver for my birthday.  It's so nice to have an excuse to wander around!

There doesn't seem to be any sort of official club at UND.  I found out about it from a geology grad student who was here a few years ago.  I'm not sure how popular it is with students, but there are scads of caches just in Grand Forks.  It would be cool if a lot of students were into it.  One thing is that you usually can't use an in-car navigation GPS unit for it because it tries to keep you on the road, but in that video they say you can use your phone, which I haven't played with (seeing as how I have a "dumbphone").

Oh no... he has a handheld just for this.

I'm sure I could do it with my phone... battery life would become an issue though.

I have heard of this but never personally tried it.  Any of you guys planning on giving it a try?

I haven't done any since the beginning of this past winter (winter is over, right?).  Hopefully I can do some this spring but I'll need to find some, er, more accessible caches.

Cool, maybe you could set up some of your own.  Throw some CD magnets in them ;)

Winter is over with!

There are several dozen in town, of varying degree of difficulty.  There's even one outside Leonard Hall if you want to look for it sometime.

What types of things are usually in them?  I assume it varies greatly but is something very inexpensive.

Usually there are small trinkets like little toys or erasers or stickers or magnets.  Some caches are more "kid-friendly" so they are larger and have more toys; some are micro so they just have a log.  What I do is bring out a bag full of things just floating around in my drawers that I'm never going to use (dinosaur eggs, bouncy balls, old keys, stuff like that).

Some people make little cards with their name.  There's a cacher in town called The Hipster who does this, and someone who makes their own Pokemon cards.

Very cool, I gotta try this.
