Continuing a tradition more than a century old at UND, Melissa Gjellstad has arrived to help the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those 19th-century “giants in the Earth” immigrants learn to inhale when they say yes in Norwegian.

(It can sound like you’re having some sort of seizure, but Norwegians often do suck in a sharp breath when saying “Ja.”)

Gjellstad is the new teacher of Norwegian at the university, where for many years such instruction (as opposed to Spanish, French or even Latin) was mandated by state law.

A native of Velva, N.D., she is 31 and fresh from a post-doctoral study program in Norway. She seems eager and comfortable in venerable old Merrifield Hall, and she is something of a presence herself: tall and kayaker-fit, with a fjord-breaching laugh and a highland stream lilt to her language.

Was it hard to leave Norway for Grand Forks?

“In ways, yes,” she said, that laugh resounding maybe halfway to Bergen, Norway. “But there aren’t a lot of tenure track positions in Norwegian language and literature in this country — or on the planet, for that matter.

“And there is an enormous history here, and amazing potential.”
