Family identifies man found in English Coulee as former City Council member Duane Lunak

Former Grand Forks city councilman Duane Lunak's body was pulled from the English Coulee early Monday morning, family members said Tuesday.

Police have not released the identity of the man whose body was discovered floating in the coulee near Altru Hospital Monday morning, but Cathy Galstad, Lunak's sister, said police confirmed the deceased was her brother at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

On Monday, a passerby noticed what was believed to be a body and contacted police, who later confirmed that the body was that of a white, middle-aged male, with graying brown hair, who was between 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall. The body was partially clothed when removed from the coulee, police said.

Lunak lived in an apartment along Primrose Court, according to his sister, several blocks away from where his body was found in the coulee in the 3200 block of 11th Avenue South.

No information about how or when Lunak died was released Tuesday night.

An autopsy on the body was scheduled for Tuesday evening, according to Grand Forks Lt. Rahn Farder.

Galstad said Lunak will be missed as a brother, a son, a father and as a friend.

"We really don't know what happened," she said.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
