What's up with the new hockey rules?
« on: July 11, 2008, 10:06:39 AM »
I don't get why they keep changing rules.  What's with this obstruction rule--isn't the whole point of the game to stop the other player from scoring?  And then you can't kick the puck in, which is the dumbest rule I've ever heard of.  It's not like the game is going to change into soccer all of a sudden!  And then NCAA decides they want the offensive zone bigger, just because.

What does everyone think?

Well I dont really follow hockey  :o but those changes sound like the game may become less entertaining  :-\

Any reasons they list for the changes?

They want to make it a more technical game than skating around and running into people, so they are making the offensive zone larger in order to make people have to work more.

Ah, well that may take some of the fun out of watching it.  Running into each other and the fights are always entertaining.

I was going to say... Why else do you go to a hockey game unless you want to see people punch the shit out of each other?

You nailed it

I have to agree with Meest though.  Changing the rules isn't going to change them into figure skaters.  Whoever came up with penalties for obstruction in the first place must have been a lottle off in the head.

whats the new obstruction rule? I haven't seen it... are they taking it from the new NHL one, after the one guy in the NHL Playoffs was sitting their in front of the goalie waiving his arms and yelling shit? That was F-ing hillarious.

Quote
Obstruction became a new rule for this season, adding to the attention given to interference. The committee was pleased with the improvement in this area, but felt more progress would be made with a specific penalty call. The rule relates to interference away from the puck in any way.

The rule reads: 'Any player who interferes with a non-puck carrying player will receive a minor for obstruction. Obstruction will be called in front of the infraction (i.e. obstruction-holding).'

A new signal will also go into effect, which mirrors the National Hockey League's signal for obstruction.

'The emphasis on cleaning up the stick work and interference away from the puck has improved,' Sertich said. 'The committee feels making a rule relating to obstruction will continue that improvement.'

I guess there wasn't an obstruction rule before at all.  Now it looks like you can't interfere with either the player with the puck, which would be interference, or anybody else, which would be obstruction.
