Minutes after BJ Pumroy found out for sure he and his wife were expecting a second child, he learned he would have to drive at least 40 miles for the delivery.

“It was, ‘Congratulations, but you won’t be able to have the baby here unless it’s two weeks early,’ ” says Pumroy, the athletic director for Valley City (N.D.) State University and a recent import to the city.

The child is due on Jan. 13, days after the obstetrics unit at Valley City’s Mercy Hospital is slated to close following years of declining births and mounting financial losses.

Pumroy, whose wife had a speedy three-hour delivery two years ago, worries about hitting Interstate 94 to Jamestown or Fargo in January: “It could be a blizzard, and we could be in a world of hurt.”

Well thats too bad, Fargo or Jamestown is a bit of a drive, especially in the middle of winter.  I guess they could go a few other routes such as a midwife or something, but thats not the best of options.

This is a problem with living in small towns.
