Tyrone and Mike's Kelley Inauguration Speech
« on: September 15, 2008, 10:04:04 PM »
I wasn't there to see it, but I like it.  I may not have always been on Tyrone and Mike's side when they were running, but they're starting to grow on me.

(from an email from student body president Tyrone Grandstrand and vp Mike Crenshaw)
Quote
Last Friday President Kelley was inaugurated as the University of North
Dakota’s 11th president. We gave a speech at the inauguration that we
have reproduced below. The speech was not meant to be disrespectful or
to offend any specific person or group of persons. It was, however,
meant to voice real concerns in regards to how the university and state
deal with student issues. Some say that it was not the time or place to
voice our concerns, but we heartily disagree. That may be the only time
we get all our faculty, staff, administrators, and state leaders in one
room at one time. We are extremely pleased that President Kelley has
officially taken on the role as President of UND, but we must realize
that we have real issues affecting students right now. As Student Body
President and Vice President it’s our responsibility to bring voice to
those issues, which means sometimes we can’t just smile and wave.

Our Speech - T = Tyrone Spoke, M = Mike Spoke

T: Dr. Kelley, we have to be honest, students are a little nervous
about a new leader at UND.  The cost of Higher Education has been rising
steadily at a rate above that of inflation.  At UND we’ve doubled our
tuition in less than 7 years, old fees have gone up at least as much,
and new fees have been levied as well.

M: We’ve seen hidden fees through our books at the bookstore, because
UND takes a cut of all the bookstore sales, and we’ve seen cost
reduction initiatives like the UND Pride card implemented with little or
no student input. Technically through it all, students have had a voice,
but that’s not how we feel.  When passive consent is all that is
required to make a change that could negatively impact students, our
voices have not been heard.

T: Some say that students are apathetic, but when over 600 students
organize to formally express their opinion, and our voice is squelched,
it seems we have no hope.  Without hope, there is no reason to be
anything but apathetic.

M: Now we believe that Dr. Kelley can bring hope back to the students
of UND.  We have a few stories of how he’s dealt with students in the
past to show you what we mean.

T: While at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Kelley worked with a young
pre-dental student who was called up to join a National Guard unit in
Iraq.  After the student arrived in Iraq it became apparent that he
would have a difficult time applying for dental school.  Well, Dr.
Kelley made the effort to continue corresponding with that student,
encouraging and assisting him in applying.  That student is now in his
second year at the University of Nebraska Dental School.

M: When Dr. Kelley was chair of the Department of Anatomy at the
University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine, he worked with many Navajo
students.  These students had a difficult time working with cadavers
because of their religious beliefs.  In 1985, well before computerized
instruction was common for medical students, Dr. Kelley set up a program
in digital anatomy so they wouldn't have to enter the gross anatomy
lab.

T: When Dr. Kelley was at the University Of New Mexico School Of
Medicine he had a minority student who struggled with histology, one of
Dr. Kelley's areas of expertise and teaching.  Dr. Kelley worked and
worked with this student, helping him get through that difficult first
year of basic science course work.  The student hit his stride and
graduated, then successfully completed his internship and a residency.
He returned to practice in his home state of New Mexico, and Dr. Kelley
chose him as his own dermatologist. Later Dr. Kelley said that he was
one of the most skillful physicians with whom he had ever consulted.

M: Now these are just a few examples of times that Robert Kelley made
sacrifices for his students. But think about what these examples say
about his character, about the man behind the face…I mean this is
someone who actually hears the Student Voice, someone who is ready to
give his time and energy to helping us. This is someone that really
believes that one student, ONE SINGLE STUDENT, is worth their time. [I
don’t know STUDENTS, does this sound like someone you want leading
your university? *Students Cheer* I SAID DOES THIS SOUND LIKE SOMEONE
YOU WANT LEADING YOUR UNIVERSITY? *Students Cheer louder*]

T: Now Dr. Kelley we’re going to hold you accountable. There’s no
doubt about that. But we know that you have the ability, the resources,
and the desire to make UND more than just a flagship university.
You’ll do more than cap tuition at 5%. You’ll do more than
transition us to D1. You’ll do more than put us in the top 100 list of
public universities…because you will make UND a family.

M: A family that works together instead of competing, that strives for
excellence instead of adequacy, and that makes every student feel like
they are an important part of that family.

T: We have high expectations Dr. Kelley, but we know you won’t
disappoint.
JUST EXTRA POLISH. I DO SOME WORK WITH EXCELL SO I KEEP THE CAPS LOCK ON :-P
