North Dakota State took over the No. 1 spot in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision top 25 coaches poll on Monday. This year, finishing near the top may have a greater significance than just a team goal.
The poll is part of a formula that chooses at-large teams to the FCS playoffs, something that is new and was a point of emphasis at the Missouri Valley Football Conference coaches meeting this summer. Bison head coach Craig Bohl said the formula is similar to the one the Bowl Championship Series uses to determine its matchups.
The FCS playoff field is comprised of eight automatic berths and eight at-large selections.
“The coaches poll is going to have an impact,” Bohl said.
