Official Group Rides: Fall 2011
- All official UND Cycling rides leave from Memorial Union, UND Campus, including travel to Turtle River SP for MTB. Other rides (such as those sponsored by The Ski and Bike Shop) may depart from other locations.
- Helmets are required
- When posting, include date, time, expected route/length/duration (or TBD) and type of ride (road, mountain, around town, urban assault, hub, etc.). Since some people don't have time to watch this thread all day, please try to have the time worked out before you post up.
- Anyone can post a ride. This means you!
Terminology:
- No drop: the whole group rides as fast as the slowest rider. Focus is on camaraderie and group skills (pacelines, rotations, three-man drops, etc.). Applied to road rides.
- Around town: group ride on whatever bike you happen to feel like riding. Focus is on exploration, hanging out, and usually finding something to eat.
- Training (or "not a no drop"): Road ride at an accelerated pace dictated by how the group is feeling or a training schedule. If you can't keep up, you will get dropped off the back and may have to ride home alone (although we try to avoid these things). Focus is on replicating harder race-pace efforts.
- Urban assault: Some people like to huck off of things; this type of ride is for them. Focus is on hucking off of things.
- Helmet: that thing you wear on your head when you ride with UNDCC.
I also want to add, I talk to LOTS of people who seem to think that they "don't have the right bike" for a particular ride.
I wouldn't really worry too much about that. Our goal is to get you riding. If someone posts a no-drop ride and you want to show up on your cruiser/trackbike/fixed gear/hybrid/whatever, please do. If you have a helmet and a bike, you can ride. Now... we'll be realistic with you, if you're showing up on a bike that either isn't safe or is largely inappropriate for the type of ride the group will be doing, we'll tell you that...
*** BUT we'll ALSO give you tips/pointers/coupons/deals for stuff to get ur bike into shape!***
Some of us are very experienced mechanics and may even be able to fix something RIGHT THERE! Now hows THAT for service! If not, most of us are willing to take an hour or two to help you wrench on your stuff to get it right (and safe)
If it's just the wrong type of bike, that isn't a problem either. We'll perhaps suggest a route that you're able to ride part of it with us, and then the group may ride the rest and if you get dropped you get dropped, maybe someone will HAVE a bike for sale or to borrow so that you CAN come and ride with us, or maybe we'll suggest when you should come check out a particular ride that is suited specifically to your bicycle!
Bottom line... we aren't haters. Just come and ride.
-
Word is out about two rides today. I will post more information as it becomes available:
- 8 PM night ride at TRSP, probably organized on Facebook in some way.
- Gravel grinder night ride, probably from The Ski and Bike Shop.
-
Hi. I'm visiting from Il. Anyone riding tomorrow morning?
-
Hi. I'm visiting from Il. Anyone riding tomorrow morning?
There is a ride at the Ski and Bike shop on South Washington at noon, it meets behind the shop.
-
Anyone interested in a morning road ride?
-
6:00 am?
-
I'm down for a little later in the day... I have morning class :)
-
I can go after 2:00 if you're thinking around then
-
after 2:00 works for me as well
-
2:15? I should be back by 3:45 or so...
-
Logan and I will be riding at 2:15 from the front of the Union. Road ride, probably Merrifield Loop. Anyone is free to join, just wear a helmet, ride a road bike, and don't be too late.
-
hey i'm a freshman this year and i want to ride. anybody up for a road ride tomorrow or later in the week? ???
-
definetly, what times work best for you. I can personally ride later afternoons, but tomorrow I am busy until 5:30ish, but after that I am free
-
i'm done at 5 everyday so that works well for me.
-
Levi, might as well make an account for the board... and don't forget to stop by the expo booth tomorrow if you can!
-
where is the booth going to be at?
-
It will be in front of the Union . . . somewhere. There should be some bicycles.
-
Mills, so you can't ride at 5 today? Are you done at 5:30ish or able to be there to leave at 5:30ish?
-
I won't be able to leave before 5:30, but if you guys want to go on a ride. You can go without me.
-
Road ride, 5:30 PM today in front of the Union. Wear a helmet, bring water (it's hot!), and be ready to ride in a group. We'll go as slow (or as fast) as we need to go for everyone to be happy.
If you have questions, please post. Especially if you are new.
Mills, we will miss you.
-
Ride today is at 5:30, time has changed.
-
yo dawgs. I was thinking a ride today at 5:00 from the union, 30 miles (aka thompson loop) the intensity of the ride can be determined at the Union
-
sorry guys, can't make it I have a meeting at 6:00 PM, and need to be there :(
-
Shoot sorry I can't make it either
-
alright, lets bag the ride. I need to write workouts anyways
-
What system are you using to write workouts? Are you not going the Coached by Larry route?
-
I asked Larry about coaching, he said he was too busy. I have an old coach that put me onto "Block Periodization". Its something the soviets used to make their athletes back in the U.S.S.R.!! check out this article, it gives a brief description http://ultimateathleteconcepts.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Yosef_Muscle_Fitness_article-1.pdf
THERE WILL BE A FUN RIDE TONIGHT AT 5PM! leaving from the Union, we are cruising around downtown then going to grab something to eat at one of the local establishments (TBD) se ya'll there! helmets required :)
-
Yeah, that's the type of stuff that's in Joe Friel's book. If your coach doesn't have really specific information on how to set up workouts for block periodization, I can lend you my copy. You get to plan out your entire year, it's pretty sweet.
-
I am anticipating a ride at 5:30 today if the weather cooperates. Who's with me?
New people are, as always, welcome and encouraged to attend. This will be a strict no-drop ride, so everyone will stay together.
-
I'm down, sounds like the perfect opportunity to break in the new ride.
-
Weather looks good for ride time, so I will see people at the Union at 5:27. No thunderstorms until around 9 PM.
-
Clouds *should* be about gone by then...
-
I gotta bail. Bike will be ready tomorrow, and I don't have time to shed the 2.1 tires off my MTB bike (I assume this will be a road ride).
-
No worries. I still show up and see if anyone else does.
-
For what it's worth, the roads are smooth and the shoulders are wide between here and Oslo.
Anyone able to ride today?
-
I'm up for a good ride as long as it's not raining like it was last night! :) any distance is fine by me. Preferably a little harder ride would be nice but if nobody wants too that's fine. FYI I only have TT/TRI bike but will stay out of aero. My cell is 701-739-1364 but I'll check back later.
-
I'm not sure how hard I can go since I went hard yesterday. What time are you free?
-
At 5 is prob the earliest but possibly 445 if appointment goes fast
-
Jake, as much as I would like to go ride again today, I think I'm going to have to skip it so I can get some more work done. Sorry dude. I don't know what's happened to the rest of the club this fall.
-
I would be up for a ride, but I have a lot of studying to do for my test coming up... I really want to ride though, but if I am able to make some headway on my studies, i would be up for some rides this weekend pretty much anytime that works for you guys
-
Beautiful day for a ride. I can go anytime 10-2. Have class at 3 need to be back for but let me know!
-
Hey Jake, sorry I never checked the board yesterday, hopefully you got a good solo ride in though. today looks pretty gnarly out so I don't think i will ride outside today, but hopefully either sunday or monday will be better.
-
Sunday, shop road ride at noon from back of Ski and Bike.
-
Friday, 5 PM, road ride leaving from the front of Memorial Union. Wear a helmet. This will be a fun, no-drop ride.
Today, if anyone wants to go for a shortish road ride around 5:30, I can go along if you post up.
-
i'm down for a road ride today. can't make it on friday though, choir retreat.
-
I can ride at 5:30 I'm seeing a Merrifield loop in the near future?!
-
Ooohh, it's looking that way. Let's call that solid then.
Today: Road ride at 5:30, front of Memorial Union, wear a helmet.
Friday (Friday!): Road no-drop ride at 5, front of Memorial Union, wear a helmet.
Sunday: Ski and Bike Shop road ride at noon, rear of Ski and Bike Shop, wear a helmet.
Levi, you're already in choir? Caaaaraaazy.
-
Is there anyway we could make it 545?
-
Yes. We can hang out.
-
Sweet ;D
-
I'm going to do the Merrifield loop tomorrow morning at 7:30am at a harder pace if anyone is interested
-
Hey Jordan,
I am planning on doing one later in the evening probably around 5-6, but I have class at 8 a.m. so I won't be able to make it :(
-
Time change: 8:15am
-
I will not be able to ride tonight or tomorrow! Hope you got a great workout in this morn!!
-
Sorry this is super short notice but I'll be headed out to do the Merrifield Loop around 4:30. Meet at the Union if you want to come.
-
Remember, no-drop road ride at 5 PM tomorrow! Meet in front of the Union and wear a helmet. All are welcome.
-
Some thoughts on group rides: http://carolinacyclingnews.com/2011/09/01/lost-art-of-the-group-ride/
Today: Road no-drop ride at 5, front of Memorial Union, wear a helmet. If you post up here that you are going, we'll not leave you behind by accident.
Saturday: Cyclocross race in Fargo (http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5875.0). You can ride a mountain bike. Post in that thread if you are interested in going; at least one vehicle will be making the trip.
Sunday: Ski and Bike Shop road ride at noon, rear of Ski and Bike Shop, wear a helmet. Ride usually breaks up according to how far people want to go, so don't worry, you won't be left behind.
-
I'm up for the ride this afternoon
-
Anyone have a spare helmet for New Alex?
-
I have one at home, but I'm swamped with class stuff until the ride...
-
Anybody up for a ride sometime today?
-
Noon road ride from the back of The Ski and Bike Shop today. All are welcome.
-
Ski and Bike Shop Tuesday/Thursday ride at 6am in Lincoln Park.
No, I won't be there, but those people who like being up early will be :)
-

-

-

-
how long is the rain going to last
-
what rain?
-
okay then ride still on ?
-
YES!! 4PM UNION MERRIFIELD!! yayyyyyyy
-
"Chilidog Thursdays" start tonight at 6:30! Come out and learn how to ride a cyclocross race: dismounts, mounts, runups, and some hard intervals to simulate the race experience*.
Fun for all ages!
Leaving from the Union at 6:30 PM
Ride a bike with wide-ish tires. It does NOT have to be a 'cross bike, nor does it even need to technically be a mountain bike, but you should be able to ride it on grass and not die.
Wear a helmet.
This series is brought to you by Chase 'Chilidog' Christenson to prepare you for Octobercross, put on by the UND Cycling Club.
*It would help if someone had a whistle and a cowbell, but we can survive without if we have to.
-
came here coz i thought there would be chilidogs provided at the practice, was disappoint.
but really, I wish i could be there.
-
Anyone want to road ride at 4:00? I'll be going out, doing a few short sprints, and the total ride will be around 20 miles.. can you guess where I'm thinking of riding?!?
-
i've got bio lab :(
-
Any rides this weekend? Isn't there a century ride? I'd be up for riding Saturday morning or afternoon and Sunday morning! I just work 11am-3pm.. And in a side note where do we pay our fees? Next meeting?
-
The century ride starts at 9, so if you wanted to come ride with a bunch of people until you had to get to work, you can come out and do that. I won't be able to make it out to ride Sunday, I'll be recovering by doing trail work at TRSP.
-
No-drop ride tonight at 5:30? I may or may not be there. Gotta get clearance from the better half.
-
Could check out the century route?
-
We should plan a good weekend ride sometime. Thinking something like intervals maybe TTT or not doesn't matter to me, then the best part is finishing the ride for a nice lunch/supper at our sponser the Blue Moose!!! Maybe next weekend? Or instead of having our meetings at the Union everytime maybe we could all head to Blue Moose, would be slightly less productive...
-
Nominate Jake for Social Chair?
I'm down, Jake. Just keep bugging people and they'll come around.
-
i'm down for 5 tonight. where are we meeting?
-
All rides leave from the front of the Union.
-
I'm out unless someone has a kid trailer I can borrow ;)
-
Noon today: road ride from the rear of The Ski and Bike Shop.
1:30 today: trail work at Turtle River State Park (http://www.endracing.com/2011/09/trail-crew-needed.html)
-
Haha what does Social Chair entail? Ps soonest I can ride is Thursday 11-3:30.. Exams coming up this week
-
Hey what do members think about getting the spin room reserved in wellness for Saturday mornings? I know you guys did it last year during week but how about a saturday mornings around 7? (havent checked what time they open on Sat) Any interest? I Definately am as week days tend to get very hectic. Sufferfest Saturdays sounds good right? : )
-
Because of the Alleycat tomorrow at 6 PM (register at 5:45), Chilidog Thursday will probably be tonight, even though it is Wednesday.
- Tonight: [[urlhttp://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5857.msg26618#msg26618=]Chilidog[/url] Wednesday, 6:15 PM, front of Union, wear a helmet and bring a crossable bike.
- Tomorrow: Alleycat Race (http://northernplainsathletics.com/node/1139)! 5:45 register, 6:00 start, front of Union, wear a helmet.
- Friday: 5 PM no-drop road ride, front of Union, wear a helmet.
- Saturday: whatever JakeCooley decides we're doing.
- Sunday: 12 noon road ride from The Ski and Bike Shop
- anything else?
-
Jake. I like the idea.. I need to talk to the new person who took Mandy's spot and see if she is cool with us even using the spin room. The only thing is we need "instructors" who are trained by the wellness center. This means they just know how to work the stuff in the room and will leave it clean, take the stuff where it needs to go after class, and have first aid and cpr certs. Since mandy left we will have to get more people trained. If anyone is interested and can be committed to showing up throughout the week we can do it!
-
Awesome sounds good Logan. Wonder if Dr. Geiger is qualified to do all that if he was interested in coming to it. If not hopefully we can get a way to make it work! I can't ride ride Friday because of work but Saturday we should do a morning group ride, I'm up for any distance you guys feel like (preferably 1-3.5hr) depending on weather and others thoughts. I'm not much of a vocal person on rides so I'll just go with the flow. As long as I'm not suffering alone in the cold wind doesnt matter :) I'm up for the Sunday ride also.
-
Sounds good guys! I am down for helping with spin classes and let me know what you guys need help with. These next two weeks are going to be a little busy since I have my block exams in less than two weeks, but i will try and make time for rides and helping out. I am down for a Saturday morning ride and what ever people want to do.
-
Anyone up for an Saturday morning ride? Thinking going to Emerado and then back on Merrifield road. Let me know. Want to do it early cause i have a lot of stuff i need to do Saturday...
-
Can i get my tires pumped somewhere before the ride? Meet up at someones dorm, anything? Let me know
-
Forget previous comment.
-
anyone interested in a 20mile chill ride today? 4 or 5?
-
I am in :)
-
4:00 Union 20 miles see ya there!
-
;D
-
Damn just got out of lab. its so nice out too! Thursday ride inbetween 11-3 work for anyone?
-
I would go anytime from 1 to 3
-
I have been alerted to Octoberfest beer tasting at the Southside Happy Harry's from 5-7 tomorrow. Who's up for a cruise ride to there for some free brew tomorrow? Leave the union at 5?
-
If that's the case, there's really no point in posting up CHILIDOG CROSS tonight leaving from the Union at 6:15, is there?
-
I'm down for integrating some cross into the beer run.
-
Ride from Ski and Bike:
...6pm - cruiser/city bike ride leaving from the shop to support the 2nd Annual Art Benefit happening Friday from 4pm to 9pm at the former Suite 49, by REA....any money raised goes towards diabetes.
Might I suggest a 5:30 departure from the front of the Union down to SBS and then ride with them back up to Suite 49?
-
anyone want to do a training ride sometime in the afternoon?
-
What time are you thinking?
-
4?
-
That will work for me, but I can't be out to long, i have a lot of stuff to get done this weekend.
What did you have planned for a route?
-
Ride 2:00, 20-30miles moderate pace. meet at the Union!
-
ride tomorrow (Wednesday) 8am. 20 miles. chill brahhhh
-
Tomorrow: OctoberCross training race #1! (http://northernplainsathletics.com/node/1121)
Monday: The Ski and Bike Shop (https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Ski-and-Bike-Shop/156589754277)
Hear Ye, Hear Ye.....Monday, Oct. 10th.....8pm, meet at the shop.....Gravel Grinder or townie ride will take place! Come check out the Serfas cycling lights product. The rep will be in town.....let's show him a good time.....after ride excitement included!
-
Short notice!!! My brother and I are riding tomorrow (Saturday) at 8am if you want to join. Going out to Emerado and back home!
-
Anyone up for riding out at turtle river park this Saturday? Or even better yet road biking out to turtle park and then having others meet us there with Mtn bikes and do some trails. possibly have someone take my car and extra cars so we can fit extra bikes to get all the bikes home (too tired to bike back home) Anyone interested? Preferably it'd be most fun to get atleast 6 ppl maybe all the ppl from cyclocross Thursday night!
-
I should know on Thursday @ CX what my weekend schedule is. Have to take some pix of the kid at the pumpkin patch at some point. I've been wanting to get some longer rides in before END-TOMBED so your idea sounds solid.
Edit: Forgot to add that SBS mentioned doing Sunday morning rides at Turtle River at 9am
-
Hey scratch the mountain biking tomorrow. Went a little hard on the bike in cyclocross and need to get tire trued. Still up for a fun road ride if anyone is interested!! Preferably morning early
-
9am out and back to Thompson?
-
sounds good! Meet at Union?
-
Yep!
-
sounds good:)
-
Hey what are rides looking like this week? Anyone want to do a short hard ride around 430 today or sometime between 1-230 this afternoon? If not just going to go to spin class at 530 with Dr. Geiger.
-
Jake: CX Baby!
Lets plan on a 5pm ride on Wed or Tue (what works best for you guys?) to do a run-through of the Sat CX course and figure out what if any work needs to be done.
Thursday 6pm = practice race
Sat 11am = the grand finale
-
I can do Wednesday; Tuesday I'll be at yoga ($5, NHRG) and the meeting.
-
I might be able to do a Wednesday ride, have exam Thursday morning so I'll see how much studying I get done today. And for sure CX Thursday and CX Saturday and Sunday ride out at Turtle River. May also do 5 or 10K homecoming race Saturday morning at 730.. Kinda want to be fresh for Sat CX though!
-
5pm Wed will be the CX course extravaganza. Can talk about it at the meeting tonight.
-
anyone want to do a road ride today? I was thinking 5:00 about 20 miles?
-
Who wants to ride around on mountain bikes in the snow at 4:15 on Thursday? Sorry Jake, I think you're outvoted for the time.
-
I'm down for that!
-
Who is able to meet at the Union at 4:15? I understand how some people might want to meet us at the Greenway.
-
I can meet at the union
-
Sorry guys, got a lot of studying to do tonight.....sounds fun though :)!!!!!!!!!
-
9am winter ridin' greenway cruise. Meet at the town square downtown. Postride stop = Dakota Harvest, and then I am going to run to SBS
