Parking Ramp
« on: August 28, 2006, 12:32:11 am »
I understand the concerns regarding the maintenance of the aesthetic appeal to the University.  However, the parking ramp in construction is being built on an area that was already a parking lot to begin with.  Destroying historic aspects of the University for such a project I would disagree with.  However this isn't the main point I'm trying to get at.  The Empire State Building was completed in a little over 13 months, and back in 1931.  Why does it take nearly two years to build a parking ramp in 2006, a miniscule fraction of the size of such a massive skyscraper?    ???

I have to run to class soon, but my short answer would be a change in attitudes towards construction since 1931, as well as the development of new techniques.  The parking ramp will not be all steel girders and glass, but mainly made of concrete, as I understand it.  You also had a great many more workers in 1931 in NYC who could be set to some goal, and with a building as high as the Empire State Building, you could follow that steelwork with the rest of the work as the building got higher, something that it seems you cannot do with a small parking structure.  The trend now seems to be to stretch a project out with fewer workers than to get it done quickly withmore workers.

More news - lower prices, and paying to get your own spot in other parts of campus.

UND plans to open parking ramp to hourly patrons
By Joseph Marks, Herald Staff Writer
Published Wednesday, January 09, 2008
UND's new parking ramp near the Memorial Union has been in operation since late September, housing a handful of parkers who've purchased guaranteed spots. But the structure will pass a new milestone today when it welcomes its first hourly parkers.

Parking will cost $1.50 for the first hour and $1 for subsequent hours, up to a daily maximum of $7, said campus safety and security director Jason Uhlir. Hourly parkers will be able to pay at a pay station before leaving the ramp, or to pay by cash or credit card as they drive out, he said.

Parking officials also are rethinking the price tag for an annual pass that guarantees parkers a spot, Uhlir said.

Those guaranteed spots originally were sold for $390 apiece. But prospective buyers balked at the price, Uhlir said, which is about six times the cost of a permit to park elsewhere on campus. Permit holders have access to parking lots but are not guaranteed spots, he said.

The new annual price tag for a guaranteed spot in the parking ramp will be decided within a week, Uhlir said, and will be somewhere between $250 and $300.

About 40 people purchased the guaranteed spots at their original $390 price, Uhlir said. Those people will be reimbursed the difference between what they paid and the new cost, he said. Ultimately, the university hopes to sell about 300 guaranteed spots to students, faculty and staff, he said.

Also new this week, some faculty, staff and students with standard UND parking permits will be able to park in the ramp without paying the hourly fee or purchasing a guaranteed spot.

The university will set aside some number of spots in the ramp for permit parkers, Uhlir said, likely between 75 and 100. After the designated number of permit parkers is inside the ramp, he said, a sign near the entrance will indicate that no more permit spots are available.

The total construction cost of the parking ramp was about $17 million, Uhlir said. The construction was financed with bonds that will come due in 2035, according to Peggy Lucke, UND associate vice president for finance and operations, and will be paid off with revenue from the ramp.

The reduction in the cost of guaranteed parking obviously will reduce the projected revenue from the ramp, Uhlir said, but will not put the parking budget into an overall deficit.

That's partly because of a revenue cushion in the parking budget, he said. Also, the department is planning a series of new parking options in the coming year to bring in additional revenue, such as offering guaranteed spots similar to those being offered in the parking ramp in several campus parking lots.

Wow, 17million for a parking ramp is a lot.  How big is it?

It's not what you would imagine 17 million would buy.  Quite less...I think.

The reason it took so long was because it was build by lazy round eye'd Amerikkkans.

Here are some photos I took today.  It's a very nice parking garage, but I wish more people could use it.

It's a waste if you ask me.  It was great when we could use it with our S Parking Passes but $1.50 and hour?!  That's ridiculous along with the yearly pass.  I'm sorry, between gas prices, being almost required to buy a block heater and how we have to pay more fees than any other university I've attended, I think the whole parking garage prices are a joke.  The same goes with half the fees.  Fees cost me 1/4 of my total tuition/fees cost despite the fact I'm only taking 6 thesis credits.  Between D1 and poor marketing, this university doesn't have a clue what it is doing.

It wouldn't be a waste if it were managed right.  Frankly, they hired an inept company to design it and have worked off a completely unworkable business model.

The entirety of the parking department should be canned.  We, as students, should get the student Senate to demand that those in charge of parking on campus resign.

They have done nothing worthwhile since their employment.

News:
Quote
At this past Sunday*s Senate meeting a representative from the
parking office came and talked to us about the parking ramp situation.
Everyday the first 150 students with any color parking pass can park for
free in the ramp.  After that there is an hourly rate.  ON the weekends
you can also park in the ramp for free.  Also, to deal with the costs of
the ramp, all the parking pass prices will be going up to around 80-90
dollars next year.  I have a basic copy of the Parking*s budget, so if
you are really interested, you can see it.
