North Dakota State University's athletic teams have been competing against the nation's biggest schools on the Division One level for a few years now.

To make it at that level, you have to be athletic, work hard and have plenty of people backing you.

Come to think of it, you need that to be a bigtime mascot too! A Rugby native is making a name for himself across the country playing the roll of 'Thundar,' the Bison mascot.

Here he is: Geoff Childress, and here he is as 'Thundar.' The mascot of North Dakota State, surprised?

"You know, a lot of people have this idea that 'Thundar' is a big party animal, and I am more of a shy, academics guy!" Geoff Childress.

The second year grad student and statistics major has donned the constume for five years. It is fun.

"Really you get a free access pass to be wild and crazy!"

And it's been hard work, sometimes dropping five pounds in one Football game. But this ex-cross country runner was ready for the grueling work - and that work has really paid off, thanks to a credit card?

He describes it as the Pro Bowl of Mascots. Geoff, Thundar, was one of 12 finalists for the award set to be announced New Year's Day during the Capital One Football Bowl Game.

"We made it into the playoffs and made it through to the finals. The week of finals finished voting last week now we are waiting on the word if we won the Mascot of the year award!"

That's right, Thundar is in the finals! Him against Cy the Cyclone from Iowa State. He's got political backing...

Gov. John Hoeven: "Number one mascot in division one football!"

And support from Bison backers across the campus, city of Fargo, state of North Dakota and everywhere!

"We were handing out buttons and pamphlets at all the football games. Handing out T-Shirts and we had Thundar graphics dressed as Uncle Sam asking people to vote for him!"

It was an extensive effort and his final as Thundar, he's now retired.

"And it was quite a way to go out. Kind of going out on top. This is as big as an award as you can get for mascoting, really."
