It looks like they've decided that posting articles on their Facebook page is the way they want to go.  :shitstorm:

Bump.  Because there must be better places to chat with people than Facebook (can't meet new people without friending them) or Craigslist.

I don't know about the DL comments (open still?), but it sucks having the Herald comments shut down.

Just saw Kari threatening to shut down a thread at the Worthington Daily Globe, so I wonder how "safe" the Detroit Lakes comments are if they get as popular as the Herald's?

Also note the heads up by Devilschild that the Detroit Lakes paper carries lots of the same articles as the GF herald and can be found at DL Online. It has comment sections that are more liberally (can I use that word?) available.

All I saw was various people telling each other "this is the end, beautiful friend," and then there was the appearance of Kari the moderator.

Was this the plan? Did they give any notice?

Why, though?  I get that people can be mean or abrasive or opinionated or combination of these things, but from a business perspective, people like to comment on the news and they will visit those newspaper websites that let them do so.  If there were another newspaper in Grand Forks, there might be some competition here.

Why not give the people what they want?  Do they think they'll get sued?

Forum Comm. seems to like to censor others.

It's disappointing, really.  As much as I try to stay way from all the vitriol that can come from online newspaper comments, I really think they serve a purpose.  I've been watching the community grow over the last several months, and people are really building relationships with each other.

Come on Herald, bring the comments back--and get a better system.  This message board is running on open source software that has loads more features than Area Voices.

Plus, smileys:  :wtf:
