Heheh - nice.  What distro do you run?

It actually depends on the situation, all of my servers run OpenSuSE, any desktop or laptop runs PCLinuxOS. How about yourself?

My laptop (Inspiron 1501) is currently running 7.10 Ubuntu (it Just Works - I've tried Slackware and even Debian and I really don't feel like having to put in days of work to make my laptop work).  It's rock solid.

I have ubuntu as a temp file server in my apartment, but I will likely just put Windows on it (although I would like to have Samba and the firewire external HD to find some amicable agreement).

I am actually working on making a fileserver as we speak on an OpenSuSE 10.2 install. Going to write some quick instructions up and post them on my site eventually.

I have never used OpenSuSE, but I see their logo all over the place.

SUSE is one of the older distros - almost as old as Slackware.  It was a pretty good one and began to fall from prominance for a number of years (although was still strongly evident in Germany and parts of Europe).  Novell recently bought it and it has had a resurgence.

Just install Slackware.;)

Haha, I actually learned on a really old build of Slackware. Hell, that was back in the day when I was programming MUDs.

Haven't we all? ;)  Ah yes, Slackware is the absolute best platform to learn from - gentoo spoils you with a walk through!

Be careful - it's a lot of work...but that's what we are here for!  Just make sure you try it out first AT LEAST as a dual boot, or better if on it's own system.

Just doing my part covering all our asses. :)

You would be excited for Ubuntu.  I have a countdown timer on my phone, does that count as being excited?

Are there still active LUG in the Grand Forks / Fargo area, and if so are there any scheduled meetings?

I am not sure if there is still one in the area.  I would recommend contact someone at the Bismark/Mandan LUG... they may know of people on the east side of ND: http://bismanlug.org/staticpages/index.php?page=20041123100810957 and

There are a few Linux users listed at http://counter.li.org/bycountry/US:nd:fargo.php and http://counter.li.org/bycountry/US:nd:grand_forks.php ... but I don't know how updated that is... a few list email addresses.

Also try http://groups.google.com/group/edlug/about?pli=1 http://groups.google.com/group/fmlug?

Goodluck.
