VENT!
« on: July 12, 2009, 11:52:04 PM »
Ah, a topic all about venting!  Feel free to vent all you want in here.

To start it out:  I am sick of the birds waking me up before 5am... seriously why are they up so early, the sun isnt even out.  Then the sun comes out and wakes me up again and again.. grrr.

No, I was never very good at the voice thing.  I built a marionette once, which was fun, but he never got to put on any shows.

and...

RRAWWWW!  People who puke on the sidewalk are disgusting!  Just go home, or at least take the one more step to the trash can!

yes, they are both made by toyota, hence the annoyance. My xB was actually a Toyota bB and converted for left hand drive (Mine is an 04, the first year they made them)

But Lexus is made by Toyota too, but you never see anyone say a Toyota Lexus do you? While you're at it you could call the Pontiac Vibe a Toyota Vibe, (It's based on the matrix) along with the mid 90's Geo Prism's (based on the Corolla of the time)

Also Nintendo is the DEVIL! It will attempt to control and addict you until you've spent every waking hour at their mercy. Worse than work; the mandatory down, it's your own voluntary down, distracting you from your own infinite possibilities; LIFE. Please avoid at all costs. There is a good episode of Doug which addresses this issue, its called Doug's Lost Weekend. Although, Television is to be considered the same.

Today's tale from a tech support "Specialist".... Num lock. Learn what it does. Arrow's are the new numbers.

Turning off the breakers to your store will indeed turn off power to EVERYTHING inside, contrary to popular belief.

Latest two Great calls.

Really, its 2009. If you don't know what the internet is, you might have failed your life already. Its a good thing you work in fast food.

If you are calling your help desk, if you don't want to get laughed at don't ask a question you can simply google.... like asking how to turn on the spell check that someone obviously turned off considering it defaults to on in MS Word....

Agree'd. I've been meaning to get over to ski and bike to get a new bike seat for the last month or so... still haven't gotten there. I have a larger back end that needs some more surface area so I can ride my bike longer to make it smaller.... the never ending conundrum.

There's a think you sit on that measures where the pressure points are, i.e., where the bones of your pelvis are situated (even if you have a, ahem, fat bottom).  They don't make you strip down and get the ruler out.

Saddle fit is as much individual as anything. If you want to "get fit" which is relatively new technology (surprisingly) you can goto SBS and they'll measure ur ass on the gel thingy (unless they got rid of it). However... this really only tells you how wide ur sit bones are. It does nothing for saddle comfort.

This is why many message boards (bikeforums.com) have "saddle swap" threads. Used saddles have pretty low retail.

Best bet... ask to try some saddles of buddies and see what styles u like... cutout no cutout.. etc. You can also ask if a shop has saddles to demo out for a week. Note... don't ride on them if the wx sucks.

At LBS' tho, this does come with implications of business.

What type of bike are you putting it on and what type of riding do you do? What are your goals? Strictly comfort? Will you be wearing bicycling shorts or not?

Why do you suppose you posted this in vent?

LOL

UND Aerospace and work ethic.

Here's the thing. When I finally transferred to the main campus I was SO EXCITED. This excitement was quickly eroded away over the first year and a half because of the complete and total bullshit that encompassed my transfer. Yes it was entirely my fault, but YES I WAS ASSURED BY NUMEROUS HIGH UP PEOPLE AT UND THAT IT WOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM! But alas, I ended up being FORCED to take 2 years off of flight training. 2 years off during a critical moment (right after you learn all your instrument stuff but right before you actually take the test for it.

So here I am after "restarting" last spring which was my first flying semester at the main campus. Its been an utter nightmare. Trying to relearn things that I know without having any instruction on them and despite briefly explaining my situation I still get looked at like I'm a moron when I don't know such simple things. I DO KNOW THESE THINGS! I JUST HAVEN'T USED THEM FOR 2 YEARS!

Still this pilot factory is less than sympathetic and no one seems interested in helping me out without some sort of "I'm better than you" type of attitude. Such comments made by flight instructors to the extent of, 'I'm not going to teach it to you, you need to know this' typically leave me baffled and frustrated yet this is all old news.

My real issue for venting is that at UND Aerospace let alone this campus the student is second. For many flight students where flying is there only priority, perhaps this doesn't become as noticeable. I however am a double major and am trying my ASS OFF to make the cycling club more than just a memory when I leave. If I have a flight scheduled at a specific time, it is scheduled there for a reason. I'm not simply sitting around in my dorm room playing Halo in my free time, I'm actually #$@*ing doing sh*t. So Mr. flight instructor(S) (because they all do it) when you call me up to reschedule my flights the night before because YOU have to work at the SOF desk or because YOU have something else that is invariably more important to do, don't get annoyed with me when I cannot commit to YOUR schedule. It would be 100% unacceptable for me to call you and suggest that I cannot make a flight because I have to work. You may even look down on me and offer some condescension about how "I need to make flying a top priority" or some other such nonsense. But whenever you have made a scheduling error and "must" work at a SECOND job ALSO for UNDAerospace, I am the one who MUST adapt.

You are a flight instructor at THE "premiere" aviation school in the world. What, exactly are your top priorities?

sigh... say what you will, but know that I'm a sensitive fellow.

Dual screen support. HONESTLY!!! For christs sake. I have more friends that roll with two if not 3 screens on their home computers... For the love of god let me keep youtube or Hulu, or anything else full screen on one and let me keep clicking away on the other...

Drives me piss ass nuts when I can't maximize a music video and watch it out of the corner of my eye and then not be able to use the rest of my computer because of stupid coding.

I've been running dualies since 2002 (good old 19" CRT Viewsonic A90F+ monitors) and its just baffling that the coding for some of this stuff is still like this... IMHO its just a programing crutch to make it easy. instead of detecting if its on said screen they code it to say any click on any location. which is just plain wrong.

I still need to find a Decent PCI card to go to tripples and then i'll be in business. :D Might have to look for that today. I have a 17" Dell monitor sitting around doing nothing.

Haven't graduated to anything big like a 28". I prefer to have different "zones" of my workspace. but i have friends that do the same thing with the large monitor but i get what you're saying. I also run a KVM to switch to my Ubuntu/Win7 computer.... So I will admit i'm more a "Power user" than more... but really... must they code like that?

Try searching on some of the MS flightsim websites like flightsim.com. I think they have triple monitor stuff.

My whole system is built specifically to run flight sim X (which is a graphical nightmare) I'm eagerly awaiting win7 stuff to normalize so I can finally run my dx10 in dx10.

I got the 28" because it was 1200i HD and I use it as a TV and for my PS3. Esentially media center through my comp.

I agree completely about the coding tho. So many people are just like well, no one really does this so lets just half ass it to get it to run well on the other side of the coin.

I hate the new U-mail. There is no way to mass delete. It doesn't empty the trash when u sign out even if you tell it to. Its altogether "nicer" but less functional, which I find ATMO accurately represents EVERYTHING about this university.

Also. UND.edu is currently down with no warning. Which is also like U-mail, blackboard, campus connection etc.

UND. pssshhhh.

Every time I go to work on Campus Dakota, to try to improve things, I get all caught up in wondering how much it matters.  How many people use the website as well as the message board?  What are they expecting?  How many articles should we post a week--and should we sacrifice quality and depth for quantity "just to get something out there"?  What should be on the main page?  Is it aesthetically pleasing to anyone else but me and pmp6nl?  Was Drupal a good choice, or did we overstep?  How many people do we need to work on the website for it to be worthwhile for people to visit?  How do we attract new schools and new users?

This is what I need to vent about right now--lack of meaningful feedback.

You have little feedback because this site is on lockdown. if there were bad things... I'd mention them. I'm message board savvy too... not just some dude.

But the site for rel is pretty nice.

Plus: most emoticons of any website atmo.

You know I am right with you on this one.  It is so much work I often wonder if its worth it (more based on current usage)... but I think it is.  While I havent talked about CD to a ton of people, I have talked with a fair number of people... and yes they think it is a worthwhile idea and project.  But of course more specific information on the site would be useful (the things you mentioned among other things).  I have some new contacts I am starting to work with that might help us out with some stuff.  I will keep you posted.

But remember, we have already served a lot of students and we can just keep trying!

When previews for movies say "Don't miss... " I always feel guilty when I miss it.

Like tonight, I'm not supposed to miss an all new mythbusters at 9pm on discovery. But I prolly will... but then I won't be able to sleep, because of the guilt.

OH SERIOUS! How is it? I've heard it was nice... I've hesitated upgrading until it has a mega fail or something. But I can't wait to get it off XP and onto 7.

Were you able to "upgrade" or did you have to do a fresh install? I heard going from XP to 7 you'll need to transfer anything you want to keep onto another HD and do a fresh install and then move the data files back?

Well I guess yes you would if your hard drive is partitioned into one giant single disc... I myself have multiple hard drives and backups as I don't like losing information :D

No you have to do a fresh install. NEVER do an upgrade. Read about all the issues doing the upgrade from vista to 7 and you'll see that also... and why would you want to do that anyway? a fresh load is almost always better for file structure and speed in general.

Sal, i was running windows 7 on an athlon 2500 (Single core 1.8ghz) with 512 ram. Ran OK, but a gig of ram is much better... and ram is cheap anyway. Only computer i have thats less than 2 gigs of ram is my old P3 coppermine that will only handle 512mb... :(

When I mentioned upgrade I meant freshing it.

Except hen I said "upgrade" in relation to freshing it.

But yes yes and yes. Which version did you get that runs well on a gigglebyte?

WOW. they did this for office 2007 but I suspected it was only because they would be coming out with office 10 and windows 7. Is this only available for home premium?

Edit: This is only for home but with 7 I can't think of a good reason to get anything more than that? Anyone? DOuble EDIT! Its also for 7 professional.

Also... this is only for upgrade?

Its for upgrade or clean install... I did a clean install and it worked like a charm.

Microsoft should be hyping up this student version if they really want to make an impact.

Of course maybe they figure all the students who want Windows 7 will just torrent it.

they did make a big to do about selling office 07 at the discounted price. I suspect they'll hype it once things are further along. I doubt they want all sorts of college kids (read as: potential morons) running their software before the first updates and drivers hit the shelves. cuz then their stuffs won't work.

Vent: too much thesis work for tonight :(

Student vesion was all over my tech sites, So i guess it was widley known as all my friends have bought it through there. I bought two copies as I have two separate school e-mail accounts that qualified. Get the pro version. no reason to get the home when you can get pro for the same price.

Was running whatever the beta was?? Pro or ultimate on a gig of ram.

Its been working great for me for the last 2 weeks or so.

Just got my clarkconnect box up yesterday, and holy hell whoever said Mac's just work obviously never had to deal with sharing a network printer connected to a linux box running a Cups server...

Windows I just go to the samba share, double click on the thing and it tells me to install drivers when i choose from the drop down menu.

My Girlfriends mac I have to manually enter the IP, then the que information... Never had to even do that in my ubuntu box... Took me 20 minutes of googling to make the damn printer work... Quite sad.

Just got this from student government:
Quote
Check http://sg.und.edu/component/content/article/89-electionpage/511-list-of-candidates.html then type their names into facebook (most candidates have a group or page.

Screw that.  Screw it to a pole.  Hey candidates!  How about not requiring that people sign up for Facebook to find out about you?  I don't know why this pisses me off so much.

I can't stand having to deal with other people's schedules, especially after we all agreed on a schedule to begin with.  Every day it's a different reason to screw everything up.  How about a little consistency in life?

Facebook is getting to be a little much.  A page isnt so bad because anyone can view it (even without a fb account), but a group isnt the best idea.  Then again, its for simplicity.

Scheduling is terrible, there is no easy way around it.  You are right, keep with what you say.

The job searching and application process is really getting to be a pain.  Especially when the market is so bad and there are tons of other people with more experience.

I am literally spending hours and hours each day searching and applying, there have been several days where I have searched and applied for over 8 hours... in one day... heck one application took me over 4 hours... jeeze this is time consuming and not fun  :angryfire:

Two things:
- There's more to athletics than NCAA.  It's too bad UND doesn't recognize that.
- Why is the UND honor roll either "the semester with a GPA over 3.0) or "a cumulative GPA of over 3.0"?  I don't understand why you should be on the honor roll based on your cumulative GPA.  It seems like a scam to make it seem like more students are doing very well each semester.
