Group Rides: SPRING 2010
« on: March 30, 2010, 12:24:52 PM »
Official Group Rides: Spring 2010

- All rides leave from Memorial Union, UND Campus, including travel to Turtle River SP for MTB.
- Helmets are required
- When posting, include date, time, expected route/length/duration (or TBD) and type of ride (road, mountain, around town, urban assault, hub, etc.).  Since some people don't have time to watch this thread all day, please try to have the time worked out before you post up.
- Anyone can post a ride.  This means you!

Terminology:
- No drop: the whole group rides as slow as the slowest rider.  Focus is on camaraderie and group skills (pacelines, rotations, three-man drops, etc.).  Applied to road rides.
- Around town: group ride on whatever bike you happen to feel like riding.  Focus is on exploration, hanging out, and usually finding something to eat.
- Training (or "not a no drop"): Road ride at an accelerated pace dictated by how the group is feeling or a training schedule.  If you can't keep up, you will get dropped off the back and may have to ride home alone (although we try to avoid these things).  Focus is on replicating harder race-pace efforts.
- Urban assault: Some people like to huck off of things; this type of ride is for them.  Focus is on hucking off of things.
- Helmet: that thing you wear on your head when you ride with UNDCC.

You can now return to Mario's post,
Beek

I will be riding for around 2 hours with sprint workout in it. I will be leaving at 5:30. If you want to join me, post here and I will show up at the Union. If there is no post,  I will be leaving from my house.

The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

A suggestion from an "armchair" observer: if all rides leave from the Union, more people will see you riding.  I know it's so much more work to swing by and hang out for five minutes, but let's try to stay consistent.

That said, I'm in no place right now to lead by example, so do what you will.

It confuses me even more that this needs to constantly be repeated. I suppose I should just go ahead and repeat that we should be wearing our uniforms AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE for sponsorship fullfillments, look professional down university (as in paceline grouping, speed, etc.). etc. etc. etc. etc.

Everyone is ALWAYS in a position to lead by example. You don't need a bike or even to be on the ride to lead by example.

I'm sorry boiys, but something came up and I had to go earlier today (that is why I called you guys). Logan if you still want to do the  3 PIGS workout, then here it is:

20' warm up with two 75% sprints in it (10"-15" each);

30' at TEMPO effort (HR 145-155bpm), 10' recovery;

20' at LT effort (harder), (HR 155-165), and if you feel like ti sprint for 10"-15" every 5', but then you have to go back to the effort; 10' recovery,

Start with full sprint for 10"-15" sec and then go into HARD 5' (HR 165-175 ), then without recovery bring it down to TEMPO (HR 145-155) and continue for another 5', then without recovery go for 3' at LT (HR 155-165) , finish last 10" with full sprint.

Finnish back home easy. If Erik comes with you , you guys shout rotate every 1'. Try to go West into the wind (you will have to go South first to get to the Merrifield Rd.). It is 2-2.5 hour workout depending how much easy riding back home you want to have. Write it on the sticky note and tape it to your top tube. Good luck, see you at the meeting tonight.

An easy, no drop ride today, about 2 hours, leaving from the Union at 4:30. Spare tubes and helmets required. Smile on the face mandatory.

Group ride today, at 4:30, leaving from the Union. Around 1.5+ hours with cross intervals in it (just like last week). Come if you wish, but it is NOT a no-drop ride.

I talked to a fellow today who mentioned that UNDCC seemed "too race oriented."  I've tried to make the group ride thread a little more inviting by adding some explanation to the first post, but we should all keep in mind that not everyone around likes to ride fast and hard all the time.

To anyone who may be lurking but doesn't want to go on any hardcore road rides: post up, we won't bite!

I just want to say to anyone that may be thinking that UNDCC is too focused on racing that...

1. We try REALLY REALLY hard to focus on all aspects of cycling, INCLUDING non-racing (in fact we try the hardest on this one). Unfortunately, with ND's relatively short "nice weather" time combined with "school semesters" it probably seems that we are very focused on racing. In fact we do compete heavily in our conference (which in turn provides awareness to further cycling involvement) and this requires quite a significant commitment.

2. Since our club is very small, many, if not all of our core members happen to race. This is completely the opposite of 3-4 years ago when we had less than 10% racing. We would love to involve more members that are just generally interested in cycling, and we would never be ostracizing those members at all.

3. The bottom line is, we are a fledgling club. If you want UND Cycling to be something that you can enjoy, there is no simpler way to do that than to participate. The reason many of our group rides that get posted seem like training workouts is because they are. If you want to post a coffee ride, or an urban destruction ride, or a bike path cruise, or any sort of casual type of ride, post it in here. Introduce yourself. Everyone that is part of this club 1. Loves to ride, and 2. Loves to have fun. Those are basically the only criteria. Sure, ultimately we'd love for you to participate actively in meetings and in the community, but we're realistic and we would be happy for you all to just share your love of cycling with us sometime.

It might sound really cheesy, but it's the truth. If you think UND Cycling is ONLY a cycling team, I hope you'll come ride with us and talk to us about what we can do better, and maybe help us do it!

Sincerely,

Let's get our legs spinning a bit. AN easy-to-moderate ride today, around 2+ hours. Leaving from the Union at 4:30. Helmets and spare tubes are required.  Everybody is welcome. No limits on how many wheels you are running on your machine, so Beek, feel welcome to come  :P
The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

Riding from the Union today at 3.  Ride will be about 3+hours (there is an option to turn back earlier if you'd like) so bring plenty of water and/or food.

Hey all, talked to Andrew at the shop and he said to post here for a ride.  Just fixed up a, you guessed it, an older 88 schwinn le tour.  Anyways, anyone want to do an easy no-drop ride anywhere around town?  I'll be starting from downtown around the bars, but could meet up at the union, say wed or thur. around 11?

First of all, Brian (if that is your 'real' name), thank you.  We seriously need more fun, urban assault rides like this.  Just going out and pounding into the wind day after day really starts to suck the fun out of cycling.

I could probably join you tomorrow. I'm assuming you mean 11am?

Also, there's a "fun-sucking" road ride today at 5:15 leaving from the Union.

I totally missed this post or I probably would have gone...  If anyone has a bike trip planned this weekend let me know, I am new to GF and would love to take a trip around with someone so I didn't end up lost haha.  Let me know if you want to do something relaxing with a bit of tour guiding ;)

Hey Natasha... lots of people are out of town for races this weekend. My girlfriend and I may go cruising around if the weather clears up a bit. For those of you folks that aren't up for the faster rides both myself and more likely Beek will probably be getting some rides going (Beek is still waiting to get cleared by his doc)...

Not to say that others couldn't ride with you guys too.

An easy ride today, 1-1.5 hours. Meeting at 4 in front of the Union. Helmets required.
The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

As long as it's not raining any more.

6pm. Union.
Merrifield TT for anyone who would like to join!

Dave...Your middle name is Patrick?!

And I did not do the 10hr nonsense.  I checked the weather after I was at your place and the forecast said rain all Saturday night and Sunday morning, and I felt like all your hard work would have been essentially ruined by a thick layer of mud.  I would, however, still like to repay you for your time in some fashion.

Yes? Pasquale to be less specific. (but it says patrick on everything). Where u see my middle name? Not that I care.

You don't have to repay me at all, it was good chatting with you. Also, as any mountain biker will tell you, mud makes you go faster, and makes all bike parts work 100% irl.

I will be going on a slow cruise this evening around 6.  People are welcome to join if they want to watch me ride a bicycle with crutches strapped to the back.

Jake C, I'll probably meet up with you but I can't go on a road ride yet...

I'd anticipate convective activity scattered throughout the region until roughly midnight or 1 am.

Ninja edit... most likely it'll be wet the next 48hrs off and on.

Current: UPB2057E2058RAB2104E2126DZB2058E2104B2126E2128

haha... if you went 20 miles west or south, and started riding west or south from there you'd be ok for maybe... 3 hours tops. just fyi...
