Group Rides: SPRING 2011
« on: January 13, 2011, 12:02:15 PM »
Official Group Rides: Spring 2011

- All rides leave from Memorial Union, UND Campus, including travel to Turtle River SP for MTB.
- Helmets are required
- When posting, include date, time, expected route/length/duration (or TBD) and type of ride (road, mountain, around town, urban assault, hub, etc.).  Since some people don't have time to watch this thread all day, please try to have the time worked out before you post up.
- Anyone can post a ride.  This means you!

Terminology:
- No drop: the whole group rides as fast as the slowest rider.  Focus is on camaraderie and group skills (pacelines, rotations, three-man drops, etc.).  Applied to road rides.
- Around town: group ride on whatever bike you happen to feel like riding.  Focus is on exploration, hanging out, and usually finding something to eat.
- Training (or "not a no drop"): Road ride at an accelerated pace dictated by how the group is feeling or a training schedule.  If you can't keep up, you will get dropped off the back and may have to ride home alone (although we try to avoid these things).  Focus is on replicating harder race-pace efforts.
- Urban assault: Some people like to huck off of things; this type of ride is for them.  Focus is on hucking off of things.
- Helmet: that thing you wear on your head when you ride with UNDCC.

I also want to add, I talk to LOTS of people who seem to think that they "don't have the right bike" for a particular ride.

I wouldn't really worry too much about that. Our goal is to get you riding. If someone posts a no-drop ride and you want to show up on your cruiser/trackbike/fixed gear/hybrid/whatever, please do. If you have a helmet and a bike, you can ride. Now... we'll be realistic with you, if you're showing up on a bike that either isn't safe or is largely inappropriate for the type of ride the group will be doing, we'll tell you that...

*** BUT we'll ALSO give you tips/pointers/coupons/deals for stuff to get ur bike into shape!***

Some of us are very experienced mechanics and may even be able to fix something RIGHT THERE! Now hows THAT for service! If not, most of us are willing to take an hour or two to help you wrench on your stuff to get it right (and safe)

If it's just the wrong type of bike, that isn't a problem either. We'll perhaps suggest a route that you're able to ride part of it with us, and then the group may ride the rest and if you get dropped you get dropped, maybe someone will HAVE a bike for sale or to borrow so that you CAN come and ride with us, or maybe we'll suggest when you should come check out a particular ride that is suited specifically to your bicycle!

Bottom line... we aren't haters. Just come and ride.

Sanders and I will be riding over to East Grand Forks today on mountain bikes to determine optimal trail possibilities for the Bikecicle race on February 12th.  Others are welcome to come along.  Dress warmly and ride something snow-worthy, the roads are crappy and we'll be stopping and starting a lot depending on the ideas we have.

4 PM from the Union.  Could be two hours, might depend on how thick my socks are.

Not that I want to be a smart ass, but I think it should say:
No drop: the whole group rides as FAST as the slowest rider can go.

It's like with a chain: the chain is as strong as the weekest link.

But, just go and ride, would ya??  :undcc:
The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

Karma is what you get when people click "applaud" on one of your posts, or what is removed when they click "smite."  You can give/take a certain amount of karma from other people per day.

The arcade stats show how good you are at the arcade: http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?action=arcade

Spinning at Northern Heights Rock Gym starting around 1 PM today.  I'll be trying to ride for 2-2.5 hours, but we'll see.  People are welcome to join if they bring a bicycle and a trainer/rollers, or if they just like watching loud movies.

At four there is a group coming in to climb at NHRG, so belay help is appreciated.

Yoga from 6 to about 7:30 tonight at NHRG, but you can get in after that, unless you want me to let you in at four.  I won't be spinning.

Unless you meant an outside ride, in which case I have no idea.

Dudes. If you are new to the team, crit practices should be mandatory. Otherwise... I wouldn't even want you doing the event since you'll likely hospitalize someone (no I'm not joking).

Taking 90 degree turns is one thing.
Taking them over and over within a kilometer is another.
Taking them over and over within a kilometer at 30mph is yet another. and
Taking them over and over within a kilometer at 30mph in a group of 30+ riders is a whole other ball game.

Nevermind being able to jockey for position in there...

Going to try and get out at 4:15 today from the Union to get a ride in before the meeting.  People are welcome to join, I'll be heading somewhere on my mountain bike depending on the wind direction and how hard people want to go (I should go somewhat hard).

Cruiser/around town ride this afternoon, leaving the Union at 4:30.  Ride any bicycle you like, wear somewhat warm clothes and a helmet.

I need to stop by Ski and Bike Shop at some point and then head to Northern Heights Rock Gym for the endurance comp, other than that I'll ride wherever.  South Coulee bike path is clear I know.

The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

Urpdate: Plan for a hard road ride today if you want to get out.  Hard because it's chilly, so make sure to wear enough clothing and a helmet.

Depending on who shows up, we can warm up with some crit practice (may NOT be at the Betty if there is a party going on there never mind, hockey game is over) and then do some Team Time Trial hammering.

Meet at the Union at 6.  Depart at 6:05.

Tomorrow: there is a longish road ride leaving from The Ski and Bike Shop at noon.  If people want, we can meet at the union at 11:40 and ride down.  Post up if you're in.

Ride will be pretty casual 1:30-2:00 hr.  Maybe a few pick ups thrown in here and there (ie 30 sec-1 min sprints), but nothing we won't all regroup for.  Ted if you have to be in class by 7:00 we could start at 5:15 if you wanted? or we'll swing back and do another small loop.

Lauren, I imagine the easier ride would be Thursday, but don't hold me to that.

Who wants to do a no-drop on Tue or Thur with Lauren?  I need to go hard at least one of those days because I am not able to ride today or Wed or Friday.

I'm going to modify this so it makes more sense and doesn't make me sound like an ass.  Lauren, post a no-drop ride on the day you want to have a no-drop ride and people will show up (although it looks like earlier than 5:15 is more difficult).  You (and anyone else who wants to ride with the club) are FREE and ENCOURAGED to post rides and not wait for other people to do it.

Not everyone has the same schedule, but more importantly, not everyone who potentially wants to do a group ride is able to make it at the times people usually post up, so the more people we have posting rides, the more rides can go out, the more people get riding, the more "normal" it seems, and the sooner the world becomes a better place.  Barring that, at least it will get you someone to ride with.

Fast/hard/workout DROP road ride TUESday at 5:15 leaving from the Union at 5:16.  We'll help you go hard, but you might have to hold on tight.  Now, if you're still reading but want to go easier, post up and there can be a second (yes, that's right, a second) ride going out at the same time.  We have enough people for this and it can happen.

IF YOU WANT, you can organize a ride for Wednesday afternoon and choose your own adventure.  This is the perfect chance if you want to do a group ride AND the Thursday meeting but don't want to do them on the same day.

NO-DROP road ride on THURSday at 5:15 leaving from the Union at 5:16.  We need to be able to get back and cleaned up in time for the meeting at 8.

As always, wear a helmet and dress for the weather, and if you want to ride at a different time, post up and see who comes out of the woodwork to keep you company!

I'm down for tomorrow in the second (slower) group.  What I would propose for the 2nd group, however, is a hard as possible nodrop (if that makes any sense at all) for the slower bikes.

There should be pretty weak winds tomorrow afternoon/evening with the temperature possible getting closer to 50 than the 45 mark.  Everyone should get out!

Mills... lucky for you. I like you. So I'll give you this pro tip.

1. Pass test.
2. Get bike, and ride the route backwards.
3. ???
4. Profit.

Just ride the route reverse, and depending on where you catch them, you can either:

A: turn around and ride back with the group to make the ride shorter/longer
B: The group (or some of them) can turn and ride with you to make the ride shorter/longer
A and B: The ride is so long that it's the shortest ride you've ever been on.
All of the above: The ride is the longest ride.

(TC: One time I took a test that was arranged in exactly this ridiculous and non logical way, but instead of being awesome no matter what choice I made... it was essentially horrible because it was graded. I got a C and I hope that professor gets run over by a train. Figuratively of course. Not literally. Thats horrible.)

This makes perfect sense.  Everyone gets a workout but the stronger riders can pull more often and the weaker riders can work on sticking in the draft.

Summarizing (and posting to Twitter):
Tuesday 5:15: Hard drop road ride, meet at Union, wear a helmet
Tuesday 5:15: No-drop road ride, meet at Union, wear a helmet

No-drop road ride today leaving from the Union at 5:15 PM.  Wear a helmet and, if you are worried about rain, dress appropriately.

Thanks for the invite last night, but I'm behind on this week's sequence.  Have to do running intervals today.

For reference this month's sequence is:

day 1) power lift
day 2) running intervals (yes that means I have to double up tomorrow or sunday)
day 3) metabolic
day 4) power lift
day 5) biking intervals

I'll probably combine the met-con and bike on Sunday.  I've been slacking on the bike so all my conditioning is bass-ackwards in favor of running.  Need to since a good non-injury marathon (a first) is this fall's goal.  Still working on the coach for more cross training.

April 9, 20100: Anyone want to go for a ride today at noon? I'm thinking 2 hrs of easy, just to get the legs spinning. Or rather, I'm gonna swing by the union at that time and if anyone is there then I'd consider picking up hitchhikers.

Frontal assault ride Tue. afternoon (stay tuned for timing).

What is a frontal assault you ask?

Basically, you ride north taking advantage of some tail wind (SW winds) till you hit the cold front.  Then as the cold front passes, you ride back with another tailwind (NNW).  At the current time, it looks like the front should pass around 4-5pm... perfect!  Still 48 hours out so we'll see.

Regardless of how the front pans out, I'm down for a ride regardless.  I'm still on the MTB so no drop. I'd probably cruise around the river and check out the flooding on the S side of town.  I made it down to the Burke addition on Sat.   There's a gnarly (safe) surfing wave in one of those large concrete forms to send ditch/coulee water into the river along Meriweather road.  I'm tempted to break the kayak out, but there are some legal ramifications...

If anyone is interested I was thinking about doing a ride at 5:30 this evening.  More of a chill no drop ride.  I am definitely tired after last weeks training and I bet the guys who rocked it down in Kansas are as well.  1:30 chat ride.

I need to do front-squats at the gym shortly, and then the sprints I didn't finish last week.  Will be heading W on HWY-2.  Eager to try out the new kit on my yet-untuned-for-spring bike.  two-one-three three-4-4-eight if interested.

Looks like the front will get hear noon-ish so no-go for frontal assault.  Instead, lets plan on a flood-patrol (no-drop) ride at 5:15pm.  We'll leave from the union, head south along 42nd down to 62nd, then head east to check out the flood.  Return via Belmont with a stop or two along the Greenway to check out more flooding.   I may bring the camera along to take a few pix.

Is anyone interested in a morning ride tomorrow?  I can't go in the late afternoon because I'm volunteering at NHRG, but I'd like to get out more than once this week.

No-drop road ride today leaving at 5:20 from the front of Memorial Union, UND.  People wanting a harder ride can work in some intervals, otherwise we'll just go out and do whatever pace is necessary.  Any and all are welcome to come along, especially if you are doing the race this weekend and want some tips.

ALSO: Required volunteer meeting for the race weekend on THURSDAY at 6 pm on the second floor of the union.  Click here for more details.

Anyone want to ride this afternoon? I'm thinking a Merrifield loop for those who don't want to go that far. followed by a Thompson for those who do want to go that far.. unless of course, its only people who want to go far, then its gonna be a MN loop (50miles).

I'm going out to Turtle River to mountain bike around 5:30.  Might still have room in the jeep if anyone else wants to come, so let me know.

And I am now kicking myself for riding to Thompson and back.  Good ride, but terrain sounds better :)  have fun!  Let us know how wet or not wet it is out there.   I'll probably go next weekend if the weather is decent.

Bike polo, Thursday night, University park, maybe 6ish?  Bring a bicycle you can fall off.

Watch this thread and twitter for updates.  I have six mallets, but if you have any old ski poles, I also have enough materials for six more mallets.

DAVE I MADE THEM OUT OF CHAIR PARTS AND SKI POLES AND ABS PLASTIC PIPE!

I finally had my technique down by the time I got the ski poles, but I think they all came out pretty well.  The first four I made were from parts of a butterfly chair I found: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/176-1460292-2242425?asin=B0033Z2HFU&AFID=Froogle_df&LNM=|B0033Z2HFU&CPNG=furniture&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B0033Z2HFU&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001

I will post photos soon, I promise.  Otherwise it didn't happen.

You get penalized for putting a foot down anyway... so it's better with clips coz it forces you to htfu.

thought this was kind of interesting. There is a critical mass bike ride scheduled to leave from Urban Stampede this Friday at 6:30. Saw a flier for it at Urban and also talked Caylan and he knew the guy planning it........anyhoo thought I'd just let GF cyclists know it is happening :)

Critical mass was sub-critical, but still fun (10 riders).  For future reference, they are going to have critical mass on the last Friday of each month.  6:30, Urban Stampede.

Supposedly there is the critical (or perhaps not so critical) mass tonight at 6:30 leaving from Urban Stampede.  I haven't seen flyers, but the organizer said it would occur on the last Friday of every month.

Regardless of whether this occurs or not, I was planning on cruising around the greenway.  If you're interested, just plan on meeting up around 6:30 at Urban Stampede.

Word is around that a gravel grinder will be going out Friday or Saturday night this weekend.  SKi and Bike shop should have info, and I'll post up here when I find out more.

You can double-check the Facebook page if you want, but the #gravelgrinder will be happening at 8 pm tonight from The Ski and Bike Shop, heading through Thompson to Minnesota, then back, about 35 miles.

YOU are invited!  Bring a helmet, a fat-tire bike, and some lights!
