What should freshman bring up?
« on: August 09, 2009, 02:07:10 PM »
Im an upcoming und freshman and am planing on joining your cyling club. Im just wondering if you could get some info out to me before i come up this fall. I checked out the web site and i assume its all right but a little outdated. Heres a few general questions i have

how often rides and races take place
what bike i should bring, road, cyclocross, or mountain
if you guys have any type of storage for our bikes or what most people do with them. Cant let my baby sit out in the rain and snow
if we have any access to tools

thanks a lot and i hope the clubs doing well

Johnny... glad to hear you're interested. The website is not "ours" and we have no access to it.

You may bring all of those bicycles as all of those disciplines are included in our program if you choose. We have no formal bicycle storage but I can tell you many people just fit them in their dorms. Some members have apartments but space is certainly at a premium. Depending on your background and what sort of shape you're in, you're welcome to race the MTB season which is early fall and the cross season which is later fall. Otherwise, the road season is in the spring but we'll start training for that officially in about October.

Rides happen almost everyday that the weather is nice. Races are weekly during the season and require traveling.

We have pretty much every tool you'll need between the teammates.

If you have any other questions post up or PM me. When you get into town let us know so we can touch base with you, otherwise we'll be at the involvement expo which is I think the second day of school?

We'll be interested in critiquing you in every way... lol... jk btw

But no seriously... we will.  ;)

Welcome on the board  Johnny, and hope to see you soon on the road. When are you coming to town? Do you have USA Cycling license?

Bring your trainer if you have one-we spend a lot of hours indoors.

Bring warm cycling clothing-we ride in cold weather.

The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

nice! If you feel like it you can come with us to the road race on the 22nd of August in Avon, MN, some 2.5-3 hours from Grand Forks (there is a link on message board about it). Do you also have a road bike? If so, bring it along. Last two winters our bikes were basically stored at one of our houses for training purposes. We would bring them to wherever we were planing to have our practices, and basically they would stay there almost all winter, with few exceptions. Between me ad my wife we have 6 bikes in our apartment right now. Guardrail has 4.5 bikes in his apartment (sorry Dave, we cannot count your kid bike with 3 feet long seat post as a one bike). Therefore, bring whatever you can, and we will find place for it, one way or the other  :evil6:

Where are you form anyways???

This is why I think we should look into raising some grant money for a "Cycle Shack" on campus to store bicycles and tools, but that's another story for when the whole club is around.

Glad to hear you're excited!  The more the merrier.  Just tell your roommate that he can borrow one of your bicycles to come on rides with us.

By the way, since Mario invited you to come race, when will you be getting into town?

Also, as far as storage is concerned, I have plenty of room at my house.  I mean, last winter most of the team kept their bikes at my house since practice was there anyway and they were relatively safe.

That also reminds me of an important update as far as the Wellness Center is concerned: I talk to J. Loeppke and Mr. Downs and apparently the WC has a lot of area they are trying to find use for. Locked areas in which we MIGHT be able to store our bikes and practice during the winter (spin room, maybe?). How is this possible after years and tears of rejection? Well, Stef is gone and Mandy Dockendorf has taken her spot, SO there is the remote possibility we could talk HER into letting us use the the WC (especially considering two of us are WC employees, one of which is a spin instructor).

Johnny... if you have no license thus implying that you are new to racing, a race on the 22nd might be a little too much. I'm not saying don't do it, just don't think we expect you to do it. You'll have quite alot going on with getting school sorted out and such. Not to mention racing is dangerous not so much for you but for the other riders when someone has limited experience.

Not to worry though, we'll take care of all of that. It usually just takes a little longer than a day.

Also, on the topic of your roommate hating you... The cyclocross season is typically the "least valuable" season. Simply because most of the races are far away and also only a small percentage of us have cross bikes. So you might consider leaving that one behind. If you live close ish you could always pick it up later in the semester.

Your road bike will be pretty necessary though. Thats our big season. If you want to race MTB bring that bike too but it isn't necessary. Though we are hosting an MTB race in early September.

Also, if you don't have a license DO NOT PURCHASE ONE YET. There are lots of little things you'll need to know before you do that and you can always buy 1-days at the races.

And where are you from again???

im for white bear lake, mn which is a suburb of st. paul and graduated from st. thomas academy. yeah ive raced a little bit but none of the serious big guy stuff so i imagine there are some things to learn. i will know quite a bit more than the average joe tho.

i like the idea of the wellness center hollywood. any good jobs that i should look for there?

ill talk to you guys when i get up there about the license too.

crazy as it sounds but i was thinking of bringing my cyclocross bike and two sets of tires / wheels so i could do some mountain biking, road biking, and trainer miles, with the same bike then bring my road bike up in the early spring for more serious racing. maybe just the road bike will be better

Well... for training purposes the road bike will be much better. For commuting, you should prolly just use a beater, or ur mtb or cross bike I guess.

Reason the road bike will be best for training is because that's what you'll be riding on. This also leaves room for changes or modifications to fit etc if there is anything wrong with it. Many average cyclists don't put the kinds of miles on their equipment that a collegiate team (well this collegiate team) will and things will break and wear out. Also, most of the outdoor riding that we'll be doing will be in the fall semester, because typically we'll only get 1-3 outdoor practices before the season starts.

As I said before, don't worry about the license because you can always get that one day license and there won't be very many road races for you to do that require a license before the 1st of the year where you'll have to purchase a new license regardless.

Its nice to hear that you have some experience, we'll simply be meshing you to our teams riding styles and tactics. A basic understanding of what's going on helps out tons though.

The biggest thing we'll be looking for from you though is commitment. We don't care if you're no good on the bike at all, we just want you to have fun.

PS how did you even come across this message board???

Regarding the job Johnny, it depends on what major you are going to go for and how much time you want to designate for training. It's all about the commitment, as Dave said. It's not just going to happen, you have to MAKE IT happen.

Hey Johnny, if you are interested in a job at the Wellness Center we have a recruitment Session on Sept 2.  If you come in you can get a sense for what we are looking for etc.  It is currently open to all students for this semester.

Unless you want to be a personal trainer....then you should probably skip it (speaking from personal experience).
