UND science team awarded $600,000 grant

A team of UND faculty members recently was awarded a National Science Foundation education grant of almost $600,000 aimed at providing scholarships to talented undergraduate students with interests in environmental sciences.

The team was led by chemist Alena Kubatova, who is a chromatography expert and the principal investigator on the grant that includes several other faculty members in the UND College of Art and Sciences: Rebecca Simmons (biology); Brett Goodwin (biology); Gregory Vandeberg (geography); and Ryan Zerr (mathematics).

The team focused the grant on topics meant to increase student environmental awareness.

Steven Light, professor of political science and associate provost for undergraduate education at UND, said in a written statement that he was “very excited” for Kubatova and her team.

“Dr. Kubatova and her colleagues have a true passion for educating the next generation of scientists here at UND,” he wrote. “Their students in this project will have a wonderful opportunity to see how tough problems are being solved through the intersection of math and the sciences.”
