The Green Bike Project? Thoughts?
« on: March 16, 2008, 02:57:43 PM »
Guys... there is some talk (has been for awhile) about setting up a Green Bike project here on campus.

If you aren't sure what a "Green Bike Project" is then hit up google and search for "Yellow Bike Project".

Essentially, a buncha crappy bikes would get fixed up and painted green. They would all get laid around at bike racks (unlocked) around campus and be available for any student to use to get from point A on campus to point B on campus where the bike would then be subsequently left for someone else.

UND Cycling (courtesy of Hollywood keeping his ear to the train tracks) has a meeting to help advise the parties involved on what would make this either successful or unsuccessful.

We want to know your guys' thoughts on the topic so that we can bring some concerns or ideas into the meeting (aside from our own).

So find a friend to smash ur head open and post up some thoughts.  :violent1:

Chad... clarify any of this nonsense if its all screwy.

Haha, I just emailed Hollywood about this since he essentially said "Google yellow bikes" when I asked him before.

I know from being sort of involved in this before that you need to be on the ball with repairs and trying to keep the bikes somewhere sort of near campus (and hopefully out of the coulee).  We had issues at my undergrad where there weren't quite enough bikes to be everywhere, and some people (actually people I knew) cannibalized some for parts (they built a cruiser).  The whole thing was taken over by the science librarian, who was pretty cool, but the program ended up being part of the library after I graduated, so you had to go check the bikes out and bring them back, which isn't really the green bike philosophy.

I assume you're going to let facilities/operations/whatever they're called know about this so they don't just steal the unlocked bikes thinking they are abandoned.

Hahahaha. Matt... please. You don't get 10 letters in your last name without knowing a thing or two about stealing things. And subsequently preventing theft.

You are correct though. The problems will lie in preventing the bikes from being stolen by students and or whatever department gets the authority to steal bikes.

Maintenance. A bike doesn't have to really work that well to ride the short distances that these bikes will be riding. I mean, Im not going to have them be dangerous of course... but we're in the very early stages of this idea. I think its someone elses idea that they just don't know how to enact. If the bikes had to be checked out from a central location... that would suck butt.

Bah... Im tired... more later.

Eh.  I'm blathering on like I usually do.  Mostly it's because I'm used to there only being two people using the board.

Carry on people, carry on.

There's a DS article about this? And they DIDN'T shout out?

This is total BS since the ONLY thing they've done so far is get Rydell to give some crappy bikes a nice new shiney paint job (Im sure that won't get them stolen) and produce a confusing flyer and a sticker.

UNDCC Got no recognition for going in and telling them how screwed they're going to be AND picking out 30 functional bikes!

Not to mention that I'm expecting to be getting an e-mail later today stating that we have to go and disassemble all of the bikes for painting and then re-assemble them. THAT won't take 3 weeks!

UGH! There are so so so many things wrong with this project already and it hasn't even been enacted yet.

It came out today, doesn't look like it's on the web yet.

They gave recognition to the Student Wellness Advisory Council, Andrew Jagim, and to Lori Betting (Wellness Center director) for the original idea.

Said most of the bikes came from UPD, and some donated.

As a student who doesn't know anything about it, it definitely sounds more "official" (and therefore less cool) than  the impression I got from you guys.

There's also an amusing paragraph about them not having student feedback yet because "students at UND are not yet aware of the project and what it entails."

This is the "official" website:  http://wellness.und.edu/greenbike
They do list UNDCC as a partner at the bottom of the page, which is something.

As an aside, if you need help with disassembling/painting, I may be able to spare some time.

Considering we had to go pick the bikes out. Load them and will have to disassemble them and reassemble them. Not to mention "teach people how to maintain them" aka... they're going to be calling us when it gets all screwed up.

In their defense, I told them we wanted nothing to do with it until we saw what sort of liability protection they were going to have. Which they hadn't considered as being "that big a deal"  ::)

I can't wait to get hurt on one of your bikes and then sue the **** out of SWAC. What a stupid program. Are we only going to be green 6 months out of the biking year, or are they going to add snow tires in the winter?

On a related note, I have to get out more, because the comments in the DS can't really represent what the majority of people on campus think, right?  If so, I'm pretty depressed right now.

Well, honestly, that guy can go right ahead and sue the **** out of SWAC.  He'll spend more money on a lawyer than what he'll get out of SWAC...because we're broke.

Any updates on this?  The Student Senate minutes from last week said something about StuGov allocating money for this--did it go through with enough support to make it worthwhile?

Yeah, we got some funding.  I'm not sure how much, though.

Also, if anyone is interested, they're working on the bikes at the Wellness Center again today from 2pm-finish.  I'll probably be there from 2-3 or so.

Wish I could drag my lab over to help, but I suppose I should teach them instead...

The bill should be up here once they get around to posting it.

Just try and step to UND Cycling if you wanna test your luck.
