Kupchella's letter to the NCAA
« on: August 17, 2006, 12:55:58 AM »
Quote from: Kupchella
Dear All,

I have chosen to communicate with you in this way for several reasons. Since you have had what you say is the ?final? word on the issue of our nickname and logo, we must now consider legal action. I want you, as well as University of North Dakota stakeholders and the general public, to know why we must. The NCAA leaves us no recourse but to consider litigation to make the point that the policy you have instituted is illegitimate and that it has been applied to the University of North Dakota in an unfair, arbitrary, capricious, fundamentally irrational, and harmful manner. . .

continued here

What do you all think? This may be more appropriate for the UND forum, but it IS hockey, so I figured it would fit here as well. Please, discuss.

Check out "The New Fighting Sue" shirts at www.fightingsue.com.  Pretty good shirt. I hope we can keep the "Fighting Sioux" name. Im amazed the poll results shoe more people wanting to change. Are there that many politically correcters on campus? If we have to change the name and mascott maybe a tough looking female boxer named Sue would be o-k. At least we"d keep the name, sort of.

I think that students should decide whether or not the name should stay and that decision should be respected by everyone else.  If the students vote to keep the name so be it...if they decide they want another name....so be it...students have a right to decide what goes on here but those decisions are too often taken away, invalidated or given up to easily!!

The student decision should be the "final" word!!

Too bad that will never happen.  The microscopic minority that wants the name changed knows that if it were ever left up to a vote by the student body or the town that supports this university so well (minus housing and noise issues) they wouldn't have a chance.

What housing issues are there, minus the noise problems?

Housing issues include the fact that rental units are limited to four occupants (regardless of size, I believe...eg. a five bedroom home can still only legally house four people if it's a rental home).  Many people also think that renters are in general unfair to college students in that it's tough to sign a lease just for the school year. Students also sometimes pay a lot to live near campus when the housing quality isn't comparable to units of the same price in other areas of town. My rental experience has been good overall, though the management has a tendency to blame the student renters for things being broken when it's really just shoddy workmanship (when the same handle falls off the same door about three times in as many months, there's no way it can stand up to the traffic coming through it).

But that's all way off topic.

The whole issue is that yes, the NCAA needs to get sued because it should not be there business what logo/mascot a school decides to use for its sports teams.  It is unfortunate that it should come to head over the Sioux, since I understand what the Sioux (Natives) are going through over having their name desecrated by being used to make money for the fat cat that is UND--it's like my going to Australia and having to repeatedly explain that American's don't eat at Macca's all the time, and that we can in fact tie our own shoes.

I say, sue the NCAA, win, and then get rid of the logo.  I don't bloody care about Englestad spinning in his grave over it.

Yeah let?s can the logo.  Just one less excuse for some people to fall back on as to why their situation of poverty, alcoholism, and suicide hasn?t changed for 100 years.  If getting rid of the logo opens some peoples eyes to the fact that a picture doesn?t keep them down, it is their actions, or lack of them, I'm all for it.

I only laugh because I was a CMU student.  We were the Chippewas but are now the Chips whose logo is the flying C.  The nickname the chips is amusing because CMU is about a 5 minute drive to the Soaring Eagle Casino ... if anything I would find that more offensive then being called the Chippewas.  At CMU the whole argument was not brought up by the tribe or people associated with them.  It was brought up by people who had too much time on their hand and not enough to whine about.  In fact, the tribe was honored we had the nickname we did because they knew CMU took it very seriously.  Anyone found in any form of indian attire that would be degrading in any form was immeaditly expelled from the game, with the possibility of never being able to go to a sporting even ever and possible expulsion from CMU as well.  That and we had to take culture classes and there were Native American classes in both catagories that we could take.

My opinion is this ... if the Sioux find this offensive then yes, get rid of it.  However, if they do not take offensive to it keep it as is.  Trust me you do not want to be know as the flying S ... oooooh fear the flying letter  ::)
