Group Rides: FALL 2011
« on: August 17, 2011, 11:23:53 AM »
Official Group Rides: Fall 2011

- All official UND Cycling rides leave from Memorial Union, UND Campus, including travel to Turtle River SP for MTB.  Other rides (such as those sponsored by The Ski and Bike Shop) may depart from other locations.
- Helmets are required
- When posting, include date, time, expected route/length/duration (or TBD) and type of ride (road, mountain, around town, urban assault, hub, etc.).  Since some people don't have time to watch this thread all day, please try to have the time worked out before you post up.
- Anyone can post a ride.  This means you!

Terminology:
- No drop: the whole group rides as fast as the slowest rider.  Focus is on camaraderie and group skills (pacelines, rotations, three-man drops, etc.).  Applied to road rides.
- Around town: group ride on whatever bike you happen to feel like riding.  Focus is on exploration, hanging out, and usually finding something to eat.
- Training (or "not a no drop"): Road ride at an accelerated pace dictated by how the group is feeling or a training schedule.  If you can't keep up, you will get dropped off the back and may have to ride home alone (although we try to avoid these things).  Focus is on replicating harder race-pace efforts.
- Urban assault: Some people like to huck off of things; this type of ride is for them.  Focus is on hucking off of things.
- Helmet: that thing you wear on your head when you ride with UNDCC.

I also want to add, I talk to LOTS of people who seem to think that they "don't have the right bike" for a particular ride.

I wouldn't really worry too much about that. Our goal is to get you riding. If someone posts a no-drop ride and you want to show up on your cruiser/trackbike/fixed gear/hybrid/whatever, please do. If you have a helmet and a bike, you can ride. Now... we'll be realistic with you, if you're showing up on a bike that either isn't safe or is largely inappropriate for the type of ride the group will be doing, we'll tell you that...

*** BUT we'll ALSO give you tips/pointers/coupons/deals for stuff to get ur bike into shape!***

Some of us are very experienced mechanics and may even be able to fix something RIGHT THERE! Now hows THAT for service! If not, most of us are willing to take an hour or two to help you wrench on your stuff to get it right (and safe)

If it's just the wrong type of bike, that isn't a problem either. We'll perhaps suggest a route that you're able to ride part of it with us, and then the group may ride the rest and if you get dropped you get dropped, maybe someone will HAVE a bike for sale or to borrow so that you CAN come and ride with us, or maybe we'll suggest when you should come check out a particular ride that is suited specifically to your bicycle!

Bottom line... we aren't haters. Just come and ride.

Word is out about two rides today.  I will post more information as it becomes available:
- 8 PM night ride at TRSP, probably organized on Facebook in some way.
- Gravel grinder night ride, probably from The Ski and Bike Shop.

Logan and I will be riding at 2:15 from the front of the Union.  Road ride, probably Merrifield Loop.  Anyone is free to join, just wear a helmet, ride a road bike, and don't be too late.

Road ride, 5:30 PM today in front of the Union.  Wear a helmet, bring water (it's hot!), and be ready to ride in a group.  We'll go as slow (or as fast) as we need to go for everyone to be happy.

If you have questions, please post.  Especially if you are new.

Mills, we will miss you.

I asked Larry about coaching, he said he was too busy. I have an old coach that put me onto "Block Periodization". Its something the soviets used to make their athletes back in the U.S.S.R.!! check out this article, it gives a brief description http://ultimateathleteconcepts.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Yosef_Muscle_Fitness_article-1.pdf

THERE WILL BE  A FUN RIDE TONIGHT AT 5PM! leaving from the Union, we are cruising around downtown then going to grab something to eat at one of the local establishments (TBD) se ya'll there! helmets required :)

Yeah, that's the type of stuff that's in Joe Friel's book.  If your coach doesn't have really specific information on how to set up workouts for block periodization, I can lend you my copy.  You get to plan out your entire year, it's pretty sweet.

New people are, as always, welcome and encouraged to attend.  This will be a strict no-drop ride, so everyone will stay together.

I'm up for a good ride as long as it's not raining like it was last night! :) any distance is fine by me. Preferably a little harder ride would be nice but if nobody wants too that's fine. FYI I only have TT/TRI bike but will stay out of aero. My cell is 701-739-1364 but I'll check back later.

Today, if anyone wants to go for a shortish road ride around 5:30, I can go along if you post up.

Some thoughts on group rides: http://carolinacyclingnews.com/2011/09/01/lost-art-of-the-group-ride/

Today: Road no-drop ride at 5, front of Memorial Union, wear a helmet.  If you post up here that you are going, we'll not leave you behind by accident.

Saturday: Cyclocross race in Fargo. You can ride a mountain bike.  Post in that thread if you are interested in going; at least one vehicle will be making the trip.

Sunday: Ski and Bike Shop road ride at noon, rear of Ski and Bike Shop, wear a helmet.  Ride usually breaks up according to how far people want to go, so don't worry, you won't be left behind.

"Chilidog Thursdays" start tonight at 6:30!  Come out and learn how to ride a cyclocross race: dismounts, mounts, runups, and some hard intervals to simulate the race experience*.

Fun for all ages!

Leaving from the Union at 6:30 PM
Ride a bike with wide-ish tires.  It does NOT have to be a 'cross bike, nor does it even need to technically be a mountain bike, but you should be able to ride it on grass and not die.
Wear a helmet.

This series is brought to you by Chase 'Chilidog' Christenson to prepare you for Octobercross, put on by the UND Cycling Club.

The century ride starts at 9, so if you wanted to come ride with a bunch of people until you had to get to work, you can come out and do that.  I won't be able to make it out to ride Sunday, I'll be recovering by doing trail work at TRSP.

We should plan a good weekend ride sometime. Thinking something like intervals maybe TTT or not doesn't matter to me, then the best part is finishing the ride for a nice lunch/supper at our sponser the Blue Moose!!! Maybe next weekend? Or instead of having our meetings at the Union everytime maybe we could all head to Blue Moose, would be slightly less productive...

Because of the Alleycat tomorrow at 6 PM (register at 5:45), Chilidog Thursday will probably be tonight, even though it is Wednesday.

- Tonight: [[urlhttp://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5857.msg26618#msg26618=]Chilidog[/url] Wednesday, 6:15 PM, front of Union, wear a helmet and bring a crossable bike.
- Tomorrow: Alleycat Race!  5:45 register, 6:00 start, front of Union, wear a helmet.
- Friday: 5 PM no-drop road ride, front of Union, wear a helmet.
- Saturday: whatever JakeCooley decides we're doing.
- Sunday: 12 noon road ride from The Ski and Bike Shop
- anything else?

Jake. I like the idea.. I need to talk to the new person who took Mandy's spot and see if she is cool with us even using the spin room. The only thing is we need "instructors" who are trained by the wellness center. This means they just know how to work the stuff in the room and will leave it clean, take the stuff where it needs to go after class, and have first aid and cpr certs. Since mandy left we will have to get more people trained. If anyone is interested and can be committed to showing up throughout the week we can do it!

Awesome sounds good Logan. Wonder if Dr. Geiger is qualified to do all that if he was interested in coming to it. If not hopefully we can get a way to make it work! I can't ride ride Friday because of work but Saturday we should do a morning group ride, I'm up for any distance you guys feel like (preferably 1-3.5hr) depending on weather and others thoughts. I'm not much of a vocal person on rides so I'll just go with the flow. As long as I'm not suffering alone in the cold wind doesnt matter :) I'm up for the Sunday ride also.

Might I suggest a 5:30 departure from the front of the Union down to SBS and then ride with them back up to Suite 49?

Anyone up for riding out at turtle river park this Saturday? Or even better yet road biking out to turtle park and then having others meet us there with Mtn bikes and do some trails. possibly have someone take my car and extra cars so we can fit extra bikes to get all the bikes home (too tired to bike back home) Anyone interested? Preferably it'd be most fun to get atleast 6 ppl maybe all the ppl from cyclocross Thursday night!

I should know on Thursday @ CX what my weekend schedule is.  Have to take some pix of the kid at the pumpkin patch at some point.  I've been wanting to get some longer rides in before END-TOMBED so your idea sounds solid.

Edit: Forgot to add that SBS mentioned doing Sunday morning rides at Turtle River at 9am

Hey what are rides looking like this week? Anyone want to do a short hard ride around 430 today or sometime between 1-230 this afternoon? If not just going to go to spin class at 530 with Dr. Geiger.

Jake: CX Baby!

Lets plan on a 5pm ride on Wed or Tue (what works best for you guys?) to do a run-through of the Sat CX course and figure out what if any work needs to be done.

Thursday 6pm = practice race
Sat 11am = the grand finale

Who wants to ride around on mountain bikes in the snow at 4:15 on Thursday?  Sorry Jake, I think you're outvoted for the time.

Who is able to meet at the Union at 4:15?  I understand how some people might want to meet us at the Greenway.
