Barack Obama racked up an almost 2-to-1 victory over Sen. Hillary Clinton Tuesday to take the North Dakota Democrats’ caucus.

On the Republican side, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney appeared to be the winner.

Democrats had an astounding 19,000 voters, nearly double what they turned out four years ago, with Obama capturing 11,625 and Clinton 6,948. Other candidates who have dropped out received the remainder.

“We are just overwhelmed by this, said Obama’s North Dakota campaign spokeswoman Brooke Borkenhagen.

North Dakota Republicans said 9,785 people voted, with Romney taking 36 percent, Sen. John McCain 23 percent, Texas Congressman Ron Paul with 21 percent, and Gov. Mike Huckabee, 20 percent.

It was only the second presidential preference caucus in state history. Four years ago, John Kerry won the party voting when about 10,500 Democrats participated. The Republicans had a 2,000 turnout because President Bush was the only viable candidate on the GOP side.
