These people are right on the money. We should cut down more poppy fields.

It's not quite that simple. Poppy crops are the only real option many people have due to pressures from local tribal leaders. We can go in there and cut them down only to have them right back there only a few days later.

Well maybe the social problems within the country need to be addressed. It seems as if this (destroy it) approach is just a band aid to a large underlying issue. Then again, who wants to put in the effort, time, and money?

If we don't cut down the poppy fields, the poppies themselves go to drugs around the world, and the money goes to tribal leaders, who support terrorism against us because we cut down the poppy fields. If we cut them all down, there is no money for terrorism.

They go back up almost immediately.
Things are improving in Afghanistan - remember this really has never been a cohesive state until recently, and even then that is only true to an extent. Everything has to be re-configured from the ground up. It will take a very long time to get things working well over there. Have patience.

It is a never ending problem.

I disagree. A long term and gradual plan that we are currently implementing right now should work as well as any other.
