** High Priority **Students of UND,Very often in our time at UND issues arise that affect our lives. Sometimes it's the Twamley Shuffle*, sometimes its professors thataren't the best teachers, and sometimes its larger issues like HigherOne (UND Pride Card), Parking Permit prices, new fees, and many others. As students, we often find ourselves in a position of weakness when itcomes to dealing with these issues. It can seem, at times, that we aresimply at the mercy of higher powers; that we are unable to make change, where change is most needed. Oftentimes, we must place our hopes in thehands of someone we don't know, who – as far as we can tell –doesn't put students very high on their priority list. It can bedifficult, frustrating, and even disheartening at times, but giving upis the first and only step to failure. It is not a lack of power thatkeeps us from our goals; it is our acceptance of the notion that thereis nothing we can do.You have more power than you think. All you need to know is what yoursource of power is, and how to use it. See, power really comes in twoforms: money and people. We may not have a lot of money individually, but we do have the people. All in all we have 12,748 students on ourcampus. Together we can influence the actions of every department, every faculty member, and every single decision-maker on campus, in thecity of Grand Forks and in the State of North Dakota. The problem is getting people engaged. We are asking you to becomeengaged. We need you to participate. If we come together as one StudentBody, we really can get any change we need for the common good of usall. We have several plans to attack the issues that are important tostudents. By participating in these things and by getting your friendsinvolved, you are making change possible.1. We need to find out what the issues are. If you have somethingthat's bothered you this year or in the past, please stop by the StudentGovernment Office and ask for an "Issue Report." We'll just ask thatyou write a brief summary of what happened, and if we need more detailswe'll contact you later. What’s more is we will keep you updated onhow your issue is being handled, and we’ll even give you the option tohelp us carry out our strategy.2. We need students to have their voices heard. to inform students andshow decision-makers that their decisions impact students. We areplanning on holding Forums throughout the rest of the year on selecttopics that are important to students. These Forums will allow studentsto hold administrators accountable, and will also help to ensure thatstudents are getting the most accurate and up to date information.Students deserve a chance to explain how a decision affected them, andthey should have the right to ask questions (and get answers) about anydecision that is made. Our first forum will be at Archives on Thursday,December 4th at 5pm. The topic will be the university’s new financialaid disbursement system: Higher One and the UND Pride Card.3. We need to use multiple methods to show decision-makers thatstudents care. We will have petitions prepared and ready to be sent tostate level decision-makers to ensure tuition and fees don't increasevery much – or at all. We need you to come in and sign them when youget a chance, so we can show our legislators that we refuse to beignored. Together we can make the changes that are important to you, but we needyour help to do it. Do not be passive about your concerns or yourexperiences. Do not be apathetic about the decisions that shape yourlife. Find passion in the realization that these are issues you cancontrol, and acknowledge that your goals can become a reality. Then act,whole-heartedly, and with the firm belief that you will succeed; andabove all…never, ever give up.Sincerely,Tyrone & Mike*Twamley Shuffle - Running around Twamley Hall to figure out how to adda class, deal with financial aid or pay a bill.Other random opportunities and informationOpen Positions on UPCThe University Program Council is now recruiting open positions for the2009 term! Please stop by the Student Government office to pick up anapplication! We want to apologize for our e-mail about the UPC event in lateOctober. A political candidate planned a special television eventdirectly over it, and the presenter asked us to postpone our event untilafterwards. We decided to fulfill his request with the assumption thatmany people who would be interested in his presentation would also wantto see the television event that evening. After we sent the e-mail afew students mentioned that it looked like a political endorsement. This was not our intention, we apologize for the miscommunication. Student Government does not endorse any political candidates.SAFE RideSafe Ride is a program that allows students to get a ride from anywhereon-campus to another on-campus location.
