School-specific message boards
« on: March 23, 2008, 11:22:57 AM »
Hi everyone,

We're trying to work out what needs to be done to make CD a better place for everyone.  We've gone through and given each school in ND and SD a private message board to discuss things related to individual schools.  Unfortunately, you have to log in to see these boards, which means that first-time visitors or lurkers don't know everything that's going on.

What it comes down to is whether private boards really meet the needs of the students.  Do you think each school needs a board to discuss things related to that school?  Do these boards need to be private?  They are currently private because we have 36 schools, which is a lot of boards to display to everyone on the front page, but we'll do what the students want.

Suggestions are very welcome--what do you think?

36 more boards on the main page would be a lot ;)  But let the people speak... what say you?

I would think of doing them as subfora, but then you're just moving all the scrolling to another part of the site.

On a philosophical note, does an empty board for a school from which we have no members really exist?  And does it promote discussion?

No, unless we make use of confederates?

We could break them up by enrollment (really big, big, medium, small) and have them as subfora.

I don't know.  I think there are a lot of school-specific things happening on the boards that would be good to have out in the open where people can see them.  We could make public the ones that have activity and save the ones that we don't yet have membership to fill--and make it clear in the Category title or something that boards will be activated when people sign up.

What do other people think?

There is a lot of discussion that is missed.  We could try your suggestion.  We just need to make sure that boards are available to all schools and that we arent targeting any certain school... as we are here for all schools.

I'm going to try something--please post here if there are problems (or you think it is not inviting)!

I can make all the other boards visible.  It would look like the Event Calendar boards with sub-boards listed below (but longer because of the full names of the schools).
