Keiko Murase arrived at UND from Japan 3½ years ago “expecting nothing is going to be here,” as in nothing to see or do.

But she adapted.

“There is stargazing, which I can’t do back home,” she said.

Assem Asali has patiently told some American students about glistening cities with bustling shopping centers and sleek ribbons of highways in his homeland, Saudi Arabia. “We are not just about oil and camels,” he said.

Nenny Fahruddin had to adjust, too. When people back home in Indonesia say “hi” to you, they mean to stop and talk, she said. Here, people often toss off a greeting and just march away.
