Stolen Bikes Alert!

Hi all,

Just wanted to send out an update about the theft of bikes from our team last Saturday. Around 9PM Saturday night, our cargo van side door lock was smashed and 11 bikes were stolen. Later that evening, a car heading south on I-95 was pulled over because it had bikes sticking out of its windows and trunk. 5 bikes were recovered from this vehicle but the suspect was released because of a lack of evidence that the bikes were stolen. As it turns out, this fellow has been implicated in 21 previous incidents of larceny. The suspect and the other 6 bikes are still at large, and police investigations are still ongoing.

We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming help and support that we've received from the cycling community. Over 25,000 cyclists have been made aware of the situation. Every bit of help counts.

To wrap up,

1. If you can, please forward the list of stolen bikes (http://bit.ly/HnBFIL) to bike shops, cyclists, and anyone else you think might be of help. We have no idea how far the other guy's gone with the remaining 6 bikes, especially since they know we're looking for them now.

2. Please, please, please bring your bikes into your hotel room on race weekends and avoid leaving your equipment unsupervised for ANY extended period of time. We've heard that a million times and never thought it would happen to us... until it did. It's an absolutely awful, sinking, indescribably sickening feeling to realize your race machines are gone. Harvard Cycling has drastically increased security measures after this incident and we sincerely hope that this is the last time any cyclist's bike is stolen from a vehicle. Really, all it takes is a jerk with a hammer.

How in the hell does being implicated in 21 previous incidents of larceny = lack of evidence?   Facepalm.
