North Dakota's second annual Marketplace Talent Search will bring eight musicians from across the state to the Alerus Center to compete for the chance to professionally record a CD.
Senator Kent Conrad and Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson will organize and sponsor the event, which starts at 8 p.m. on Jan. 15 and is free to attend.

The musical competition is held as part of the buildup to Marketplace for Entrepreneurs, an economic development exhibition which will also be held in Grand Forks at the Alerus Center.

Over 90 people auditioned for the chance to be a finalist, and the eight musicians chosen represent a broad range of musical styles.

More than $10,000 in prizes will be given to the contestants, including a recording session with the Grammy-nominated Makoche Recording Co., a recording company and studio based out of Bismarck.

UND connection
One of the competitors is Louise Pinkerton, an instructor in UND's Department of Music since 2005.
The soprano singer and Metropolitan Opera regional finalist will perform the well-known opera aria "O mio babbino caro" by Puccini.

She said that she thought the song would be a good choice for the contest. "It would be familiar and it also has lots of high notes in it," Pinkerton said.

She auditioned during a Grand Forks regional competition with about 20 other hopeful musicians in October, and was notified last month that she would be able to go on to the next round. Pinkerton said that it should be a good night for the region and the musicians.

Community event
"It's a really great event because it's a statewide competition and this year it's in Grand Forks, so it's good for the community to be able to hear these people from across the state," she said. "It's also a really great opportunity to promote one artist, the winner they pick."

Her UND students, she said, haven't really heard that she is a finalist since she didn't know until December.
"Because a lot of this happened really close to the holidays, I haven't had the chance to really spread the word," she said.
But she hopes for a good turnout from her students when she takes the stage. "I hope they're excited, and I hope they come," she said.
