Uhhh...looks like 10.04.

You could keep it at 10.04, thats what my server runs on.  10.04 was designed as a long term release, meaning they will continue to release updates and support it for a long time.  I only recommend upgrading to 11.04 if its for your laptop or desktop computer, not servers (though servers should run fine on it).

Thats what I was thinking.  The upgrade through 9 was painful (I recall) because of the difficulty mounting shared drives over the network, which is why I ended up moving to 10.04 in the first place.  As long as things keep working, I'll be happy with it on my old machine.

Here's a question: I have a drive mounted over the network that I am using Synkron to do backups on, but after a while of copying the drive seems to lock up (the light keeps flashing but I can't access it from any computer on the network).  Do you think that's a hard drive problem, a NAS problem (the drive is plugged into an Apple Time Machine), or something with Ubuntu?

Backups are a grizzly bear to get right.  I think I'll move the drive to plug into the server and just access it (on the rare occasions I need to) over the Internet through FTP--but I'd rather be able to mount it as a drive in OS X from my laptop so I can run backups onto it from there as well.

In any case, I need to get Ubuntu on a decent machine so I can see how well it really works!

Do you mount the drive over the network through the mac's os or Synkron?  I am not too familiar with Synkron, have you tried using rsync, there are plenty of guis for it that work on mac... If you give rsync a try you might be able to figure out where the problem lies by comparing...

I don't think its an Ubuntu problem if you have anything setup correctly, have you tried accessing the server or drive from another computer?

That's it, except the Time Machine also acts as a router.  The drive is mounted (on the Mac side) with Macfusion and on the Ubuntu side with fstab.  I would gladly just use sftp for everything except Synkron won't see the drive as far as I can determine (on the Mac side).  If that were the case I wouldn't have a problem plugging the external right into the Ubuntu machine and then sftp-ing in to do backups.

For the record, I'm using Time Machine for most backups but I have a folder of files I periodically update and am trying to do this automatically.  I think I may have solved my own problem, it's the Ubuntu drive I'm mounting via Macfusion, not the external.  Hmm.

So you were just mounting the wrong drive?  If you cant get Synkron to work correctly I would look into rsync.  Rsync will do a good job of automatically keeping stuff synced, whereas sftp is more manual.  I guess it depends on how you want your network/backup setup.  I backup online, but my Ubuntu server can also backup my entire network and it serves as my media center and a webserver for testing stuff.  I guess it depends on what exactly you want to do and how you want to do it.

Are you just using the server as a webserver or does it also do other stuff?
