Official Group Rides: Spring 2011
- All official UND Cycling rides leave from Memorial Union, UND Campus, including travel to Turtle River SP for MTB. Other rides (such as those sponsored by The Ski and Bike Shop) may depart from other locations.
- Helmets are required
- When posting, include date, time, expected route/length/duration (or TBD) and type of ride (road, mountain, around town, urban assault, hub, etc.). Since some people don't have time to watch this thread all day, please try to have the time worked out before you post up.
- Anyone can post a ride. This means you!
Terminology:
- No drop: the whole group rides as fast as the slowest rider. Focus is on camaraderie and group skills (pacelines, rotations, three-man drops, etc.). Applied to road rides.
- Around town: group ride on whatever bike you happen to feel like riding. Focus is on exploration, hanging out, and usually finding something to eat.
- Training (or "not a no drop"): Road ride at an accelerated pace dictated by how the group is feeling or a training schedule. If you can't keep up, you will get dropped off the back and may have to ride home alone (although we try to avoid these things). Focus is on replicating harder race-pace efforts.
- Urban assault: Some people like to huck off of things; this type of ride is for them. Focus is on hucking off of things.
- Helmet: that thing you wear on your head when you ride with UNDCC.
I also want to add, I talk to LOTS of people who seem to think that they "don't have the right bike" for a particular ride.
I wouldn't really worry too much about that. Our goal is to get you riding. If someone posts a no-drop ride and you want to show up on your cruiser/trackbike/fixed gear/hybrid/whatever, please do. If you have a helmet and a bike, you can ride. Now... we'll be realistic with you, if you're showing up on a bike that either isn't safe or is largely inappropriate for the type of ride the group will be doing, we'll tell you that...
*** BUT we'll ALSO give you tips/pointers/coupons/deals for stuff to get ur bike into shape!***
Some of us are very experienced mechanics and may even be able to fix something RIGHT THERE! Now hows THAT for service! If not, most of us are willing to take an hour or two to help you wrench on your stuff to get it right (and safe)
If it's just the wrong type of bike, that isn't a problem either. We'll perhaps suggest a route that you're able to ride part of it with us, and then the group may ride the rest and if you get dropped you get dropped, maybe someone will HAVE a bike for sale or to borrow so that you CAN come and ride with us, or maybe we'll suggest when you should come check out a particular ride that is suited specifically to your bicycle!
Bottom line... we aren't haters. Just come and ride.

Sears is leading a fattie ride from the shop at ~7:30-8 tonight. He has a pretty nice trail down by the river on the south side of Lincoln park.
-
Aight peeps, it's time to get back on track about group rides. I want to ride more, so there must be other people. If we work hard enough maybe we can double the size of the club by the time we can ride outside?
For anyone new, riding with people is the ONLY way to ride in eastern North Dakota. We're a friendly group, we like to paceline and make it easy for you, and we'd love to be in your draft. Until the road riding starts, however, there will be continued night or weekend mountain bike/fatbike/crossbike riding occurring. Sometimes on short notice. Sometimes in adverse conditions. But hey, why not?
SPECIAL BONUS! We'll be riding 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 7 days a week at the UND Wellness Center until at least after spring break, so keep an eye out for those spin classes as well. We'll teach you a lot, I promise.

I will be going on a three-hour ride at 4 PM. If anyone else wants to go, we can make it 4:15 from the Union and I'll swing by. Mostly will be sticking to Greenway (on and off trail) on Ted's Pugsley.
Let me know if you want to go.
-
Wish I could join, but I'm out. Gotta do some last minute prep on the house before a showing tonight at 6.
-
Cruiser/Bikecicle reconnaissance ride today, leaving from the Union at 3:15, stopping by downtown square at 3:30, and then to the downtown Greenway area to figure out what sort of pain can be inflicted on people who compete in Bikecicle this year. Ride any sort of off-road bicycle you have.
It's going to be a beautiful day.
-
Wednesday, Bikecicle ride to finalize course, and do some course prep. Plan on meeting at the Moose parking lot around 3:15-3:30. I have three snow shovels I will bring to help get the course ready.
-
Tuesday night, 8 PM Valentine's Day fatbike ride from the Ski and Bike Shop.
-
Ok, I totally dropped the ball and forgot I have an important meeting at 4pm tomorrow. I got the OK from the snowmobile club for us to use the trail. If you guys want you can meet without me, or we can push it back to Thursday, doesn't matter to me except I won't be able to bring the three shovels tomorrow.
Since we can use the trail, I figure we can run a similar course as last year except we cross the river where we scouted the other week and then run the route we charted out.
-
last minute: 8:15 townsquare, ski/wheels or feet, lets dominate the new snow.

I'll join ya! I don't know if I'll do any overpass repeats though

Ladies-only ride THURSDAYS leaving at 6:30 from behind the Ski & Bike Shop. Seriously, no matter what level rider you are, if you're a lady you're welcome. Sometimes the group will split up according to ability, but nobody is going to be left alone. Think of it as a way to meet other women who are into cycling.
