Title: A Personal Wiki for Data Management
Post by: pmp6nl on January 28, 2011, 01:54:35 PM
Is anyone using a wiki for managing their personal data? Sal, I think you do..hows it working for you?

I am thinking about using Mediawiki (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki) to do this, but I am not sure what exact approach I will take.  Additionally, I was thinking about hosting it on my home server and syncing it with my laptop for when my home server is not on or I cannot get a connection; though I am not sure how well this would work.

Any ideas?

I'm using Tiddlywiki (http://tiddlywiki.com/) for three projects right now, although they theoretically could all be part of the same wiki and kept separate by tagging and naming conventions.  I'm finding it useful but I'm probably not using all the features available--use it mostly as a notebook with a page for every day, but it's better than my physical notebook because I can search all the text for what I am trying to remember.

Mediawiki might be overkill for a personal system, but maybe you have a lot of things going on in your life  :-P  Ideally if you wanted something accessible from anywhere (with a computer, that is) you could store a Tiddlywiki in your Dropbox and sync it everywhere, or you could install something lighter than Mediawiki on your server and be able to add/edit things from your smartphone (if you have one).

I'm sure there are lots of thoughts to be had on this subject.

Thanks for your response.  Tiddlywiki does look promising and I will give it a try.  I agree that mediawiki may be an overkill.

The GTD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getting_things_done) addons looks interesting: http://mgsd.tiddlyspot.com/demo3.html

I have been using this setup for a few weeks and it is working pretty well.  It looks a little complicated at first but gets pretty easy and powerful quickly.  I need to write an #article about this. :)

That looks pretty spiffy.  I've generally been using a ToDo tag and then searching for it when I run out of things to do.

Ho do you install such a thing?
