Could you imagine what would happen if you could do what you suggested.

mburtonk, you can register a new phone number in about any state than have that phone number forward to any phone.  It will not work the way you said, but it would work the other way... A number of your choice forwards to the English Dept.

You can forward the number you register to anything you like!

Huh.  Too bad I only have one number :)

Do you have to be registered owner of this number, or could I forward, say, the English Department Office to my cell phone and mess with people?

I use this so that I can give out my number publicly without worrying about...related problems.

Works great!

Just to give an short update:

I have been using the service for about a week and it is working really well.

So I just came across this sweet service that will let me sign up for a phone number just about anywhere in the USA for free.

What it does: Once you signup for the account and select the phone number you want you can have that phone number automatically forward to all of the other phones you have... IE: cell phone, home phone, office phone.

This is nice if you are temporarily living in another area and you dont want to change your cell phone number and you want a local number.

Some other nice features listed on their website:

Quote
    * Check your messages by phone, email, or online
    * Keep all your messages online for eternity
    * Record and store your phone calls (just like voicemail)
    * Quickly (and secretly) block an annoying caller
    * Click-to-dial from your address book
    * Surprise your callers with a custom voicemail greeting
    * Forward, download, and add notes to your messages

I am not affiliated with them in anyway, I just thought it was a cool service so I thought I would share it.

Its free, at least for now.
