Title: Group Rides: FALL 2010
Post by: Sal Atticum on August 16, 2010, 02:45:33 PM
As all good things must come to an end, so does summer break.  I introduce to you the Fall 2010 ride topic; as always, please read, think, and click on the answer.

Official Group Rides: Fall 2010

- All rides leave from Memorial Union, UND Campus, including travel to Turtle River SP for MTB.
- Helmets are required
- When posting, include date, time, expected route/length/duration (or TBD) and type of ride (road, mountain, around town, urban assault, hub, etc.).  Since some people don't have time to watch this thread all day, please try to have the time worked out before you post up.
- Anyone can post a ride.  This means you!

Terminology:
- No drop: the whole group rides as slow as the slowest rider.  Focus is on camaraderie and group skills (pacelines, rotations, three-man drops, etc.).  Applied to road rides.
- Around town: group ride on whatever bike you happen to feel like riding.  Focus is on exploration, hanging out, and usually finding something to eat.
- Training (or "not a no drop"): Road ride at an accelerated pace dictated by how the group is feeling or a training schedule.  If you can't keep up, you will get dropped off the back and may have to ride home alone (although we try to avoid these things).  Focus is on replicating harder race-pace efforts.
- Urban assault: Some people like to huck off of things; this type of ride is for them.  Focus is on hucking off of things.
- Helmet: that thing you wear on your head when you ride with UNDCC.

I also want to add, I talk to LOTS of people who seem to think that they "don't have the right bike" for a particular ride.

I wouldn't really worry too much about that. Our goal is to get you riding. If someone posts a no-drop ride and you want to show up on your cruiser/trackbike/fixed gear/hybrid/whatever, please do. If you have a helmet and a bike, you can ride. Now... we'll be realistic with you, if you're showing up on a bike that either isn't safe or is largely inappropriate for the type of ride the group will be doing, we'll tell you that...

*** BUT we'll ALSO give you tips/pointers/coupons/deals for stuff to get ur bike into shape!***

Some of us are very experienced mechanics and may even be able to fix something RIGHT THERE! Now hows THAT for service! If not, most of us are willing to take an hour or two to help you wrench on your stuff to get it right (and safe)

If it's just the wrong type of bike, that isn't a problem either. We'll perhaps suggest a route that you're able to ride part of it with us, and then the group may ride the rest and if you get dropped you get dropped, maybe someone will HAVE a bike for sale or to borrow so that you CAN come and ride with us, or maybe we'll suggest when you should come check out a particular ride that is suited specifically to your bicycle!

Bottom line... we aren't haters. Just come and ride.

Lads... I know this is VERY short notice. I am officially done with airplane nonsense. Ride leaving from the Union at about 4pm. 8/20

We'll hang out for a few extra mins. Prolly just do a Merrifield and it will be a No-Drop... SLOW Road Ride.

Questions... feel free to ring me or beek!

PEACE!

No Drop ride leaving from the Union at about 430-445. This will be a SLOW road ride again. Bring water... dishsoap is not necessary.

Anyone riding please use EXTREME caution riding on/around campus. With people moving into the dorms there is quite alot of "not following" the traffic laws... watch for doors and people excited about moving into a dorm... for some reason...

Weren't you just telling me how excited you were to move into the dorms when you first got here? :mystery:

No... I wasn't excited at all... the only reason I was even considering dorms was to get a cheap ass UND apt...

Logan and I are going to get green things now. Might be at a group ride at 3 (personally I doubt it since I've not been able to ride the entire alleycat course in under 3 hours ever).

If people are still interested, we encourage interest. Sanders... take this over or something.

Hi gyudon, welcome to Grand Forks!

I think a lot of people will be participating in or volunteering for END-AR this Saturday, so I'm not sure how many riders you can find for that day...

BUT--the best way to find people to ride with is to post up that you are riding on day X, at time Y, leaving from place Z (usually people leave from the UND union).  You don't need to wait for any sort of "official" announcement from the club.  After you post, people will usually pop out of the woodwork to say they can show up at that time or not.

Personally, I'll probably be available to ride Sunday or Monday afternoon but I may be interested in mountain biking more than road.

ride is still on, there looks to be some precip coming...bring rain gear if you have some...no ride if its thunderstorming.

If you are a newer guy and don't want to ride in the rain thats fine to there will be plenty more rides

Sanders. I will be there.

For those who are curious, you'll want some cold weather stuff perhaps. 60 degrees is pretty cold on the bike, primarily ur feet. Wear a heavier sock, and if people don't have cycling cold weather gear... we won't make fun of you for showing up in a hoodie or something.
Title: Re: Group Rides: FALL 2010
Post by: Sal Atticum on September 09, 2010, 03:19:10 PM
Sorry for the late notice, but I will be heading out for a road ride today from the Union at 5:05 PM.  Wear warm clothes and lights if you have them.  We'll go as fast as people want to go, since I'll probably be the slowest rider.

Today looked a lot better than yesterday in terms or precip, but it still might rain a bit.  Show up anyway if you're in the area around then and we can talk about bikes or something if we can't ride.

Lads... I'm planning a MOUNTAIN BIKE ride (bring anything really... well with tires 28c minimum is prolly safe) at Turtle River.

The ride will be Sunday Morning because I enjoy freezing my ass off. Hopefully the trails will dry out by then, but if not then the ride WILL BE POSTPONED. I DO NOT have any intentions of causing undue trail damage.

The time is TBA but Expect an 8-9am departure from the Union. Car space is limited. Ask questions and BRING TUBES!

Where: Turtle River
What: Chill (as if there's any other type of MTB) MTB ridin.
When: SUNDAY
Time: TBA
Meet at: Union (expect between 8-9)

Helmets required.

We'll be meeting at 8:30. Leaving NO LATER THAN 9AM!!

In short... if you plan on being there and aren't going to show up at like 8:35 then you should post or call because We'll just leave as soon as we get peeps bikes racked up.

The weather (while nice) its super windy, so screw road rides and come get dirty. Turtle river isn't too serious, crappy bikes can easily survive.

Road ride today at 5:25 PM!
Bring helmets, road bicycles, tubes (if you have them), and a smashingly good attitude!

When: 5:25 PM (we will leave at 5:30)
Where: Memorial Union
What: Road ride (no-drop)
How far: 20-30 miles
Who: YOU!

I'm calling this "no-drop" because I'd like to see as many people as possible.  We'll negotiate the pace on the fly, but if you're worried about being left behind, rest assured that NOBODY will be riding home alone.

Hey guys...

Do you have normally scheduled rides (time/meeting place) during the weekdays?
I will be in town early next week and would like to join for a road ride if possible.
I was a member of the UND Cycling Team about 10 years ago.  I'll be in GF visiting my family, so if anyone is game for heading out, let me know!

Thanks!

Brian

Brian your best bet is to subscribe to this thread. You can even get the text in an email if you want.

Our group rides go out on a non scheduled basis per se, but anyone can post them. We always start and end at the union. So basically, when you get into town post up on a day when you plan to ride and a time and head to the union and other cyclists will likely meet you. Most rides go about 5 oclock ish, but you can post whatever you'd like.

The wx next week doesn't look great, but we'll see... I'd love to get out with you.

Lads I know its rather short notice but since football is sucking im going out for maybe 50 miles. Anyone can come. I'll be riding at my own pace. I'd say plan on 3 hours when all is said and done.

I'll be at the union at about 345.

1.  Possible (weather pending) longer ride Thursday in the early afternoon.  Planning on Thompson loop.  Stay tuned to this topic for details or get in touch with Plantains (http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?action=profile;u=321).

2.  Group cruiser ride Friday at 5:30.  Meet in the front of the Union with your helmets and good spirits.  Where we ride is TBD, but we'll most likely find some food.  Ride any bike you want.  New people are especially invited to show up!

New officers: we're looking to you for leadership, so come out and ride!

Yep, in general... if we post a ride, it will happen unless we post to cancel it. Just for continuity and so some of the new guys know whats up.

Currently the wx doesn't seem to know what it's doing. It looked amazing yesterday, but looks only good right now. But I'd think that it will still go down with the forecast models I'm looking at currently.

Yeah, we'll have to get an update from Lauren on how it went.

Road ride today.  I'm bumping things to 5:15 departure because we're running out of daylight.  Wind is out of the NW so I'm thinking we can extend reverse airport loop or something.  Pace will be dictated by whoever shows up.  Meet at the Union, wear a helmet, and new people are (as always) welcome to show up.

In case people haven't been keeping track, Tuesday seems like a bad day for those of us who have been posting rides, so feel free to schedule something tomorrow.  It can't be a bad day for the whole club, right?

yupp I made a facebook event and told them to bring lights.....unfortunately this is really the only time that works for most and one of the only times I won't possibly be scheduled at the shop or doing school stuff so maybe it's a night ride? I might switch it to Sunday mornings though at some point.  Last week went well. We had about four altogether and went for about 15 miles on the greenway and hopefully a few other people can make it this week too!

1.  Cruiser ride today (Friday) at 5:15 at the Union. Wear a helmet and ride your sexiest bicycle.  We'll go wherever people want to go (greenway, points of interest, food, geocaching, etc.).

2.  Ladies' ride on Sunday:
women's group ride sunday 6 pm-7:30ish meet at the Union anyone interested can email me if they have a question......... [email protected]

3.  Meeting early next week (Monday or Tuesday).  Keep checking for time.  See meeting minutes (http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5352.0) from the officers' meeting last night to see what we'll be talking about.

yupp I made a facebook event and told them to bring lights.....unfortunately this is really the only time that works for most and one of the only times I won't possibly be scheduled at the shop or doing school stuff so maybe it's a night ride? I might switch it to Sunday mornings though at some point.  Last week went well. We had about four altogether and went for about 15 miles on the greenway and hopefully a few other people can make it this week too!

Thats super awesome! Who were these mystery people? Get them to come to meetings.

Looks like we're gonna be doing a ride tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm. It will probably be between 50-60 miles. Bring food and water. Tubes, etc.

If you have questions message me.

There will probably be another ride happening Sunday at 1pm. Also in that same distance range.

These rides will be extensions off of our "normal" loops. SO you can probably still come out, and just check off at the merrifield turn or the thompson turn and make it back solo or in a small group if alot of people decide to head back at the same time.

Hmmm...

I also just wanted to post that this stupid clipper moved up a little in the forecast, so Sunday is now looking like it will have more ferocious winds (backside of the high pressure system, so think... we just had the front side coming through for those past couple windy days) so Sunday is currently FORECAST to be very windy again (gusts in the 30s).

SO! If you're planning to ride, I'd say that tomorrow is the day. (Sorry beek.) I'll go later with you if you want though?

I was wanting to go on one road ride this week or next week, but didn't know how long these typically are. I don't know if I could last more than two hours......Also I obviously don't know how to ride my road bike very well and wouldn't mind some tips. Is there a better day of the week at all for newbies to go?
Title: Re: Group Rides: FALL 2010
Post by: Sal Atticum on October 04, 2010, 01:52:04 PM
We definitely won't be out for longer than two hours, but if you're worried about lasting that long I would advise bringing food (raisins, clif bar, gummy worms, whatever) and as much water as you think you will need.  If we do Merrifield it will be around 25 miles.

With the weather getting chillier and the wind being as unpredictable as it is, my suggestion is to get out and ride while you can.  As long as the posted ride isn't a "training ride" or "hard ride," anyone is welcome to show up, even if they haven't ridden with us yet this year.
Title: Re: Group Rides: FALL 2010
Post by: Plantains on October 04, 2010, 02:04:44 PM
Lauren.
1. You should come out on this ride. Never waste an opportunity to ride or learn in this ND weather.
2. Beek I will accompany you on this ride as I am done failing my test for today.
3. Skip Radio, how you feeling?
4. Wind. Ugh...

Also, if it IS a training ride or a hard ride, you can still show up, but we won't wait for you, and we won't generally be happy if you can't hold your line. THESE ARE THE RIDES TO DO!

Plus. I haven't been hit by a sugar beet truck yet.

Road ride today at 5:15.  You have to bring your helmet, but you can bring your B, C, or even D game.  For those who are keeping track now, this Thursday ride will be going out for the rest of the semester or until nobody else shows up, in case people are worried about scheduling.  New people are welcome, even if we haven't ridden with you before.

Orange Flash, did you get some riders on Tuesday?  Sanders did people show up yesterday?

There will be a road ride (no-drop) today leaving Memorial Union at 4:55 PM.  Wear your helmet and bring some food.  We won't be going longer than Merrifield loop (~23 miles).  New people are welcome--it's not too late to get some good rides in before it snows, and you might as well train up for the cyclocross series (http://talk.campusdakota.com/index.php?topic=5388.msg22535#msg22535).

We'll shortly be moving times up even further because sunset is at 6:41 today.

There is a group ride going out this sunday morning at 9am from the SKI AND BIKE SHOP! They run group rides every sunday morning (I guess the coffee ride officially got taken over by the coffee riders?).

If I can get free from my cardboard prison, then I think I might go on this ride. If some of you new dewds want to gain some street cred at the shop, this is a great way to do it.

In case I don't make it, the ride leaves from BEHIND the shop.

I'm hoping to get out and cruise around a little on my way home tonight.  5 maybe?  If anyone else wants to get outside, you're welcome to come along.

Also, if anyone is heading to spin classes, post up here and see if you can't get anyone to come with you.  At the very least it makes us look active.

Beek... I might go with you. But I think I sent some of my ski stuff home after last winter. It'll depend when I get out of the lab though too so don't wait up.

Spinning tonight at 7 PM at Northern Heights Rock Gym (one of our awesome sponsors)!  Bring a bike and a trainer, or you can bring a bike and use my rollers if you want this time.

Figure out rides among yourselves, I have to be there to work at 5 so I can't drive anyone.

If I can borrow yours, I might be able to bring my ride.  Have to do a run as well.

I don't have a trainer, so you'll need to feel comfortable with being on rollers.

Well that didn't go very well did it?  I'd probably get the hang of it eventually, but I think I'd rather work with a trainer and mess with getting better at balance during the season.  (Found out trainer's on it's way last night.)

Sweet that your trainer is coming--yeah, the rollers take some getting used to, and might not be what you want to be on if you are on the "beat yourself up every day" training plan (unless you fall off them repeatedly).

Anyone down for some casual greenway cycling/goofing-off on Sunday?  Paths were plowed as of a few days ago. We should have a couple of inches of fresh snow after Fri-Sat... I just wanna have some fun with the winter tires and get some miles in.  I'm a couple of dozen miles short of a 1000 on the year, and with some business/family trips coming up... I wanna make sure I hit that mark before the new year.

What time are you guys thinking for Sunday? I'll be working at the shop from 12-5 and will most likely be putting the finishing touches on a paper in the evening.

Would consider riding in the morning though, if we can end at Dakota Harvest for some breakfast and coffee before I have to get to work.

Tomorrow will be straight-up cold.   High of -5F,  north winds gusts in the mid20 mph range.  I'll make a go of it around 1pm at the town square.  Not sure how long I'll last, but I'll give it my best shot!

Good ride.  Went across to Blue Moose, up to the northern ped. bridge, down south to Lincoln Park... goofed off around there for a bit, then went down to the golf course and back home via city streets.

Greenway (before this light snow) was mostly plowed down to the pavement. A few portions were drifted over.  There were only a couple places was I unable to pedal through and that was mostly because of foot traffic making the snow rough.
