Track cycling interest - responses needed
« on: July 15, 2011, 01:37:34 PM »
U of M is interested in hosting a collegiate track cycling weekend, during which we could learn to ride on the track and then race.  Who's interested?  Please respond quickly, you can also contact Megan Kelly directly if you have questions.

Hey everyone,
Is anyone interested in coming up to Minneapolis for some track cycling?
I think it's still within the realm of possibility to put something
together before collegiate nationals, Sept 15-17, but it would be
silly for the U of M to put on a race and then race each other (as
opposed to all of you).

The three basic questions that need to be answered before going forward are:
1. Are you interested/would anyone from your team come? Let's assume
for now we can find you all some host housing, and we have plenty of
rental track bikes for people to ride.
2. Would you prefer to spend 2 days on the track or 3 days on the
track? In either case, we'll spend the first day learning not to run
into each other or slide off the track, and the other 1-2 days racing.
3. Would you prefer the weekend of August 6, August 13, or September 10?

Let me know, and if there's any interest, I'll start talking to the
track director and officials and USAC etc.

The velo PROBABLY has bikes available for you to use if you don't have one! This is a VERY unique opportunity considering how few velodromes there are in the WORLD! If you like bikes... this is something FUN that you can do!

I feel like we should race on bikes we already own? I have no idea how much it is to rent a track bike, but if the cost is reasonable, its totally worth the trip. So long as no cross races are over this weekend, I'd be interested. (If there are bikes, and racing, I'll be interested)

This is obviously an old thread, but I'll give you my insight.  I've ridden the Velodrome in Blaine and in a word: "amazing."  So much fun.  Generally for events and even for beginners the bikes are available for free to borrow on a first come first serve basis.  Track racing is a thrill not found in any other type of bike racing.  Fast and Furious, and way better than silly Japanese cars.  If any of you are ever in the area, I'll take you up to the indoor track in Boulder or the outdoor Velo at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Later!

Nate
