Mines doing UAVs too?
« on: August 19, 2010, 09:29:24 AM »
Must be a growing industry at other places than ND!

Quote
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) team finished in second place at the International Aerial Robotics Competition, held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

The competition, sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, challenges students to create and launch an aerial vehicle capable of fully autonomous flight through a confined environment. The UAV must also have the ability to intelligently interact with physical items it encounters.

During the competition, the School of Mines team was also awarded best technical presentation, best technical paper and best system design.

UAV is part of the Center of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing and Production, also known as CAMP, at the School of Mines. CAMP is a program that uses teaming to offer an innovative approach to engineering education.

Team members: Raunaq Bhushan (M.S. technology management, India), Toby Hullinger (computer science, Vivian), Brian Jensen (industrial engineering, Watertown), Erik Kaitfors (M.S. mechanical engineering, Spearfish), Andrew McGuire (M.S., robotics and intelligent autonomous systems, Rapid City), Jefferson Olsen (computer engineering, Rochester, Minn.) and Jamie Vickery (electrical engineering, Luverne, Minn.).

Congrats!
