Some feedback needed today

I'm working on a project for graphic design class.  We need to create a logo, so I chose Campus Dakota.

Any feedback on these two ideas is appreciated, positive or negative.

For anyone who is curious, the top edge is the topographic profile on a line from the SW corner of SD to the NE corner of ND with vertical exaggeration.

I think its pretty cool.  Some more color could be good as was mentioned above.
